I know I can check my own guns and fly, but was curious about the above.

Sorry but wont' happen. I take a copy of my FFL's license with me when I travel just in case I come across something I have to have is just really cool or shiny.

Not for a FTF purchase. The longarm MUST be purchased from an FFL of any state to be able to bring it back into one's homes state.

As others have indicated, for out-of-state purchases of handguns, the buyer must take possession from an FFL in his home state.
