registration of a firearm in PA

I have a friend that is getting rid of an older AR and is willing to sell it to me at a VERY good price. He is the original owner (PA RESIDENT) ....... Here is the question ....... Why do I need to go to a FFL dealer to have it transfered if there is no requirement to register a firearm in PA

I do have the flame suit at the ready

You don't need to, a face to face transaction of a long gun without paperwork is legal in PA so long as the buyer is not prohibited.
Only reason would be if the seller is more comfortable with doing a transfer via an FFL.

There is a sticky in the classified section of this forum with a good bill of sale for face to face sales. Gives you written proof that the buyer stated he is not a prohibited person. Not much, but might help if there is ever a problem down the road.

A bill of sale is good for the buyer too. If the seller should ever report the firearm missing, that piece of paper is your get out of jail free card.
