    Default Retention holsters

    Rather simple question regarding OC:

When it comes to a holster, is it recommended to use one that would complicate a bad guy trying to snatch it from the holster? Something like a thumb-break or a Serpa-style retention?

Right now, I use a Don Hume for CC, pretty much identical to this one:

Just seemed to me that when OCing, it might make more sense to have the gun a bit more "secured." Please correct me if my assumption is without merit.

I would recommend an active retention holster for any method of carry, especially OC. <---My $0.02

I personally would not openly carry without a retention thumb-break (which I use). The thumb strap, with practice, is plenty quick to draw from.

With a thumb break strap, be careful when re-hosltering. While it's a rare and unusual event, it's possible for one of the straps to get into the trigger guard as you press downward into the holster. If this happens, it's possible that the downward pressure, which would exert a backward pressure on the trigger, could cause the gun to go bang.

I always hold open the straps, and keep my thumb pressing down on the hammer (i carry a sig) as a re-holster.

I would not carry without some type of retention even cc, the last thing I want is to run or something and have my firearm fall out. I carry the Bianchi carrylok, I do not think it slows down draw at all. http://www.bianchi-intl.com/product/...?TxtModelID=82

I use the Blackhawk Serpa, no problems... Holds it in there pretty good. If you pull up on the gun before pushing the button it stays locked in there. So when you sweep your hand down to draw you push the button, then pull, and the gun will release. So for 1911 folks like me it would go something like sweep, button, pull, safety, fire...

Retention is more awareness and mindset. Crooks have thumbs that can break straps and fingers that can push buttons too. Also thumb breaks usually do not allow for a safe single handed return to holster.

Thanks for the replies all, I'll seek out a holster with active retention.

Here's an example of retention beyond that of a simple thumb break: http://www.safariland.com/DutyGear/p....aspx?pid=6360

Safariland ALS system is tops in my book for retention. Have been using one for years in the mil and out.

Safariland 070, 0701, and two ALS's, one for a 1911 and one for a Glock. Nuff said about retention holsters.

Someone mentioned crooks have fingers to push buttons too. This I agree with. A Retention holster will not stop a gun grab but it will delay the attack and give you, the gun owner, time to react and take appropriate action.

    Training, training, training.
