    Question 223 match ammo

First, forgive my rambling - I got too much sleep!

Searching, I found a discussion about black hills ammo... and there is the other, rather devolved discussion about 223 ammo raging...

But I have on order a RRA Varmint ar-15... that comes with the fancy pants wylde chamber and 1:8 rifling... Great for 600 yard shoots with 80 grain bullets supposedly.

But them 80 grain bullets are freekin' expensive!

I guess I just need to get some Black Hills match 77gr, probably about 100 of them just to break in the barrel. Then get some 69 grain matchking, 68 grain match jhp, and some 55gr match jhp, and see how they all do at the 100 yards I'll mostly be shooting, eh?

Any "bargains" in match ammo out there? Is Black Hills blue-box "it" for cheaper ammo that will print really nicely on paper? It certainly seems cheaper than any of the Federal loaded with Sierra MatchKing bullets...

    Looking around I found:

black hills red sierra match king
    fulton - 734/1000
    kiser - 729/1000

Black Hills red 68 grain match HP
    fulton - 599/1000 .599
    kiser - 569/1000 .569
    gunbroker - 180/250 .72
    gunbroker - 350/500 .70
    midway - 692/1000 - .692

    Federal sierra match king
    outdoor marksman - 13.75/20 = .6875
    ammoman 399/500 = .80
    ammunitiontogo.com - 167.95/200 = 0.83975

    Federal 80 grain match ammo
    ammoman 13/20 = .65

Not looking for excessively cheap blasting ammo... unfortunately .223 is too expensive for that even at wolf prices - I'll have to get a .22 upper later for that.

Also, I see occasional deals like this:

    .223 Remington 68gr Boattail Hollow Point Match 1000pk $420.00/1000 = .420 - http://www.georgia-arms.com/index.as...OD&ProdID=2150

But it looks too good to be true...

    Thanks for humoring me...

HI. you would be better off buying a reloader and load them your self. that way you could just load 5 or 6 rns. untill you find what your gun likes. match ammo is verry high right now. i can help you with that if you wont me to?

thats one of the main reasons I started to reload, I can build what ever I want. the bullets themselves arnt that much more money, about 2 bucks more per 100 than a normal FMJ, but not near as much as what they charge for match bullets loaded from a store.

No need to waste good barrel life on your new match barrel firing 100rds to break it in. Most of today's match barrels are good to go from the start. Any additoinal break-in, if needed, will be accomplished when you are sighting it in. If all you're going to be shooting is 100yds. then go with the 52gr SMK load.

You don't know what a rifle will like until you feed it.

That being said, Sierra Match Kings or any Nosler will sually get you close.

Man, you should be able to reload and get your per round price down to under $0.30. Plus, once you find the load that your rifle loves you can buy in bulk and get the price even lower. Also, it's fun to work up loads to see what happens.

The problem is that the search for the perfect reload never ends. Wait a minute maybe that isn't a problem.

Nope the only problem with that aspect of reloading is that you're always trying to get a better load. Then you realize that the .25moa improvement cost you a arm and a leg in reloading equipment haha. I probably got 2500$ tied up in reloading equipment already and its showing no signs of stopping

Yeah... I am trying to avoid the reloading thing. Already get enough grief from the wife for too many hobbies taking up too much time, space, and money.

Then again, talk to me in 3-6 months. If I can keep "down" to shooting 20 rounds of match .223 per range trip, I should be "doing ok".
