    Default transporting pistol

Can my 18yr-old son transport a cased pistol from our house to a gun club we are members of without me present?

If the pistol is his, and he can own a pistol in PA at 18, then yes, absolutely.

If the pistol belongs to someone else, then I'm not sure. Generally you must have your LTCF to be in possession of someone else's firearm. I am posting this from my cell phone, let me try to double check the statutes...

Edited to add: If the pistol belongs to somone else, the answer is no, the relevant statute is 18 PA C.S. 6115.

If he is not prohibited from having a firearm and legally acquired it, then yes.

It must be unloaded and he should travel directly to/from the range/home

There is no registration in PA, so firearms aren't really "His" or "Yours". If the firearm was yours, you are allowed
to give it to him with no paperwork/LTCF being required, being his dad

If the firearm belonged to his dad "OP", his spouse, grandparent, etc... the answer is yes. It also could have been given to him by will or he could've brought it into PA from another state or he could've had it transferred to him by a Sheriff. Answer is not "no" in those cases

OP: If the firearm is yours, just hand it to your son. No paperwork required

Is the intent to lend or to transfer?

I can't read the OP's mind. There is also no statutory definition that defines what constitutes a loan in regards to timeframe

Then perhaps you could have quoted my post in its entirety, including the first sentence.

Your 18yo son can transport your handgun directly to/from a range.

Transfers/gifts/etc between spouses, parent/child, and grandparent/grandchild don't require any formal paperwork. A "loan" between those relations would be effectively a "temporary transfer."

You should instruct your son that he cannot go on any side trips or make "pit stops" on the way. The law only allows for direct trips. ...so, he better make sure the car has gas and he's picked up all his snacks/smokes/etc before transporting the handgun.

Since he is 18, he can also get a Maine carry permit. It is valid in PA and in vehicles. The only place it wont cover him in PA is in 1000ft school zones.

Interesting, what about brother to brother both older than 21?

The law only exempts transfers between spouses, parent/child, and grandparent/grandchild. Sibling transfers are not exempted, nor would a loaning be.

A sibling transfer would require doing so at a FFL or sheriff. You can "loan" a handgun to a sibling, but he would need to have a LTCF.

Anything transfer that crosses state lines needs to go through a FFL regardless of relations.
