So I'm filling out my paperwork and was curious as to what others have selected for the reason for applying section.

you can select from, self defense, target shooting, employment, gun collecting, hunting, and other.

Does what you select have any weight on the application process?

What have you guys checked?

When I filled mine out in Montgomery County I left it blank and asked the sheriff what to check. He took it and checked self defense.

You're filling out the Application For A Pennsylvania License To Carry Firearms, right?

Self-defense.

It's the only reason among the enumerated options which is explicitly protected by the PA Constitution, which is why I prefer it.

I've also seen it mentioned that having it marked that way may be helpful in some reciprocal states, but I have no direct knowledge of that.

Seriously, Self Defense, as already said, is the best (and really the only) option you should choose.

Interesting. Not sure that's entirely legal, depending on what he said, but there's maybe an itsy-bitsy teeny-tiny chance that might work in your favor some day, and I don't see how it would be likely to hurt you.

As we've discussed in other threads... say that you're in another state that has reciprocity with PA and you are requested or required to show your LTCF to a cop.

If it says target shooting or any of the others besides self defense, the cop might not think you are legal to carry, when in fact there really is no difference in what is marked on the PA LTCF for reason to carry...but an out of state cop would not probably know that.

Have you gone down to the gun permit unit yet?

I was down there two weeks ago for a renewal...

Be prepared to wait....bring a money order for exactly 20$ (not 25$...they wont take it...two people found out the hard way).

I waited an hour and a half in that pit...all the way up to 2pm.

Put down Self Defense.

All other options are covered under the law elsewhere in the PA UFA or Act 235 that do not require you to have a LTCF.
