    Default Good Encounter... in NY

Preface: in NY, licensing is very different than in PA. One of the *ahem* "features" of NY is that a judge can place administrative restrictions on licenses. The judge in my county issues licenses with "hunting/target only" restrictions, then if you take an approved class, he'll typically lift those restrictions. However, when he does so, he adds a handful of other restrictions, one being that we are required to inform LEOs that we are carrying whenever we interact with them.

So today I was on the way home, stopped at a stoplight. The light turned green, but the guy in front of me was sleeping. I beeped to wake him up, and half a second after I did so, BAM!!! The guy behind me ran into me. That's right, he hit the gas despite two vehicles at a full stop in front of him.

When the LEO arrived, I handed him my NYS permit. He looked it over for about 15 seconds, said "okay", then handed it back to me.

    That's it!

Extreme BS but about what I'd expect from NY. Must be bad up there if something like this is considered a good encounter.

Well, I'd call it a good encounter within the parameters that were set forth (being required to inform). Given that requirement, could you see this encounter possibly being any better?

I completely agree with you guys that the whole NY permitting process is BS. This is just the tip of the iceberg as far as unconstitutional crap in NY firearms laws go. There's not enough threads on this forum to cover that.

Considering New York's gun laws and overall feelings towards guns - that certainly was a good encounter.

Do you have any logical reasons that would aid forming the opinion that this was a bad encounter?

Well from other encounters I've read about on here this one seems pretty neutral. I was just expressing that nothing happening being good instead of just neutral must be a reflection on NY's carrying attitude.

I doubt that cop moved to NY from PA. It would have been more interesting.

Bad judge, but very good cop considering NY or PA standards.

I really hope we can convince our chiefs of police to let us drop the duty to inform language in our carry bill before we go back for a vote.

Yeah, I dont think anybody wants to see another Officer Harless type incident in any duty to inform state..

That being said, I would say the OP had a pretty smooth encounter for NY.
