Re: self defence ammo question
Wow, there are a number of good ones. Winchester white box JHP are a lot of self defense for the money and are readily available at WM. WM now also carries Federal Hydroshoks which are very good. Speer Gold Dots, Hornaday, the list goes for some time. What ever you choose, be sure it will function well in your pistol, both slow fire and rapid fire.
BCM and Glock...for a bigger pile of 'cold dead hands' brass.

Re: self defence ammo question
Personally, I carry Speer Gold Dots. That's just me though.
I hear lots of great things about Federal HSTs if you can find them, and just as many good things about Gold Dots, and Winchester Ranger T and PDX ammo.
They should all do the job, I'm just partial to Gold Dots because I can find loaded rounds and unloaded bullets to hand load easily. On top of that reports I've gotten have shown them to be solid defense rounds. HSTs have shown up as incredible during testing, and a couple reports I've heard have backed up the testing. It's too bad they're so hard to find.
Find which one you like best and see which one feeds best, then look at pricing and availability.

Inexpensive, relatively speaking, and ran in my G23 like a top.

Re: self defence ammo question
I'd be happy with any of the above, or Remington Golden Saber BPJ, as long as they function reliably in my gun. That's the key point - you want to test at least 100, preferably 200 rounds of your chosen ammo without any failures.
Most premium SD ammo costs about a $1 / round in the "consumer" boxes of 20. You can get the same ammo in law enforcement packaging (50 / box) for much less.
