If you really think about the question, I think there is no one gun to fill every need. My biggest concern would be ammo. The easiest way to stock up on a large supply of ammo would be .22 caliber. I reload and have powder, primers, bullets, and brass but if I really wanted have a great volume of rounds it would be in .22 cal. They are cheap, come in a great variety, small and therefore easy to install large quantities. The argument against would be not enough stopping power but I think hunting would be more important and just the physical sight of having a gun would be a good defense deterant. So, I do have and would suggest owning a bolt, semi. and handgun in .22 cal. Three inexpensive guns for the price of 1000 rounds of .308

When TEOTWAKI happens it will depends on if you have to bug out or bug in , people who lives in cities and so will have no choice but to bug out, i live in the sticks so i will bug in.

If you will be bugging out i would suggest a light rifle such as a AR15 carbine. In .223/5.56.

Personally i love my AK's but but my AR15 comes in at 5 1/2 pounds which makes it ideal if i have to move a lot.

In .308 , Your best choice will be a FAL, the PTR 91 is great but expect to pay about $1200 minimum.

If it were the end of everything and I had one gun for the rest of my days, I'd take a flintlock. It can be maintained with minimal smithing skills. Not only can you make your own black powder you can make/obtain the ingredients that are in black powder.

I think it all depends on your situation...

Urban: AR platform in 5.56/.223 with a sidearm.

Country/Forest: Bolt action in .308 or even the AR-10.

I do agree though that a bolt action will be easier to maintain.

I'll be having an AR15, an AR pistol and whatever sidearm I take from your corpse.

    The former in 5.56.

I'd probably bug out initially with an AK. Something simple and light like a side folder or under folder. And a basic side arm. I think 12 gauge might be the best Jack of all trades gun, but its heavy, ammo is heavy, and range is fairly limited. Yeah, something in a domestic caliber would be ideal, but... I really just prefer AK's. And not in. 223. Mainly because the mags would royally fuck you in short order. Talk about uncommon. And prone to not working.

Anything outside of AK range I'm going to run, not fight anyway. Probably carry 3-4 mags each and carry more food and water.

If push comes to shove I'm sure there will be plenty of guns to be had. By searching, or... other means. Food and clean water, medical supplies etc will be so much more important.

But if I had to walk out the door right now. Its going to be with an AK. Less shit to worry about. It will go months without needing touched. And even if it does rust. Who cares. The barrel wont. Neither will the chamber. And the fcg can be half jacked to hell and still work in an AK.

An AR is probably the better choice in the USA, but meh, I prefer AK's so that's my choice.

My side arm will be. 45 as well. I know... again... not practical.

Something like the 5.7 or PMR 30 would be the perfect end of the world side arm. Both are light and hold a rifles worth of rounds.
