CCW as School Alarm Responder
Hi,
I was wondering if it would be OK to carry my firearm when responding to an alarm call at school building overnight? I am an administrator that is the first responder to the burglar alarm. I asked the local police officer that is the schools resource officer and said that if I carry and the police respond to the call they won't "jam me up" as he said. Any thoughts on the idea? If I respond and someone is in the building I would have no protection otherwise.
Thanks for any info.

Re: CCW as School Alarm Responder
Preface: I am not a lawyer. If you want legal advice, contact an attorney.
This presents a legal catch-22. If I were to suggest you carry and you end up shooting someone in a "bad shoot" scenario, I'm opening myself up. If I suggest you don't carry and you end up getting hurt or killed, I wouldn't be able to live with that decision.
That being said - if there is a burglar alarm, call the police first and wait for them outside before you do anything. Carrying a firearm for self defense is not the same as carrying a firearm to play police officer.
I won't tell you to disarm yourself and put your safety at risk.
I will tell you that playing police officer is going to get you in a lot of trouble, professionally, legally or worse.
As always, obey the law and be safe. There's nothing in that school that's worth you getting hurt or imprisoned over.

If you HAVE to be a first responder, I'd find someone to give you written permission to carry your firearm.
If not, I'd make sure you don't get out of your vehicle until the cops show up."Stupid people are ruining America." --Herman Cain

I would assume that you work for the school so I would recommend contacting the school districts attorney for advice. If they say you can carry in that instance get it in writing.
Even if the law may or may not have an allowance for carry on school grounds, unless you are certified to carry as part of your job, you may end up in hot water with the SD if they disagree with your actions.

What are your duties as a first responder?
As I see it your only duty should be to facilitate police access to the building.

Are you a security officer or an administrator for the school (board)? If the latter you shouldn't be doing a building check at all. Wait for the police, let them do the search.
If you're a security officer then carrying might jam you up via Act 235 if you are not so certified.

I wonder if getting Act 235 certified would help mitigate any potential legal issue's for the op? From what I understand it doesn't cost much and can be done by attending classes over 4 weekends. Seems like a potential inexpensive extra layer of insurance to me

as others have said, wait for the cops and hand them the keys. your job is not to go in and see if some maniac is lurking the hallways.

Personally if it were me Id call the cops and let them enter the building first....
Too much of a legal gray area, and it really isn't worth losing your job over, getting injured, or getting sued, especially since it is not your property.
