Very nice article. I hope others will read and learn something from it. The 2 big things that stand out for me was the distance and using the front sight only, when in a confrontation. when I was doing armed boardings for the USCG we used the "3rd eye" technique. We would walk around the suspected ship with your sidearm rasied to the level of your chest, and it was always pointed in the direction that your eyes were looking. If a BG stood up or came out from behind cover you could very easily get your front site on him quickly with little or no effort.Of course this does not work in the everyday cuz no matter how legal OC is, i think you may have a hard time explaining why you were pointing your weapon out in front of you on the street.

The "reactionary" gap is also a big consideration. We were trained not to let anyone within 21 feet of us if possible. That was determined to be the disance at which a person trained in the use of weapons stood a reasonable cahnce not missing where as a BG not trained stood a much greater chance of missing in streesful situation.

All in all a really good article, and hope it gets a sticky at least for a little while.

No one has ever been attacked in a situation that going to a local gun range simulates.

No one gets attacked by someone at 15 yards in a well lit, unobstructed area where the perp doesn't move at all, you aren't surprised, aren't under stress, aren't scared and are in no physical danger.

When was the last time someone got attacked while standing on a firing line, waiting for a beep, by a target that isn't going to shoot back and remains still at 15 yards while holding a plate on a stick?

Airsoft may be the best response. We can't practice a real defensive scenario but we can get as close as we can.

Airsoft nor anything else can replace the feeling that you will get in a life or death situation. No amount of practice, defensive drills or anything will ever prepare you. When bullets are flying, and you realize that your life may be ended at anytime, or even at the flashing of a gun, and the reality of the threat, everything goes out of the window. You will never learn to steady your nerves enough or keep your composure enough in practice, to face a life or death situation. When faced with the reality of a gunfight, all of your training goes out the window, and it comes down to your survival instinct., Fool yourselves if you want, but take reality for what it is. That is not to say don't practice, it is to say be realistic about your level of proficiency in a gunfight situation. Papaer doesn't shoot back, and Airsoft doesn't kill. That said, Great Post
