How do I tell if the scope rail is level with the bore?
Is there a way to tell if the scope rail is parrallel with the bore of a rifle?
Basically, is there a way to put a bubble level in the bore and compare it to one on the rail?Adams County Sport Handgunners Association - President

Re: How do I tell if the scope rail is level with the bore?
You could try this: Set your gun in some kind of vise to hold it still. Get a wooden dowel rod and insert in the muzzel, level the gun. Then check to see if the rail is level.
Are you having some problems? Or just wondering, and want to check it?

Take a grid target at 100 yards. Level the grid.
Take the gun receiver and level it in sandbags. Put in the scope and align the crisshairs on the grid. Tighten her down.

I'm not trying to see if the scope is level. I want to know if the Picatinny Rail is level.

Re: How do I tell if the scope rail is level with the bore?
rolands reply would be one way to check it, you can get small levels with a v groove in the middle so that it will sit on a cylinderical object. Using wood you shouldn't hurt the bore any. You do need to insure that there is NO clearance between the dowel and the bore or you will get a slight slope. Once you level the gun with the dowel in the bore, transfer the level to the rail and see how much, if any the rail is off. This will check the rail vertically.
Now, what about the horizontal alignment (the barrel pointing to the right and the rail pointing to the left)? Are you not worried about that?
My question is why worry about the alignment? Any sight (iron, optic, etc.) is going to be adjusted to match the bore anyway.Ron USAF Ret E-8 FFL01/SOT3 NRA Benefactor Member

The rail is on a hinge to fold forward and so whether or not it's level comes into play. I think I got it figured out though.
