Revolvers for new shooting females is always tough.

On the one hand, you want the SP-101 you advised, since that gives you an indestructible, comfortable workhorse to learn on. But it's wicked heavy for a small female to carry.

On the other hand, you want a light airweight to carry, also as you advised, but one has to wonder at their durability, since a new shooter wants to put a lot of rounds downrange in order to learn. Is an airweight built for that high round count? And you can be sure they're not fun to shoot.

One answer is "both," but then you run into budgetary questions.

One could argue that a plane-jane steel revolver in .38 would split the difference between the two.

Not to sidetrack too much, but why a revolver? In my experience the girls I've taught to shoot did not like revolvers.

I'm with dgg9 on this one. All steel is the way to go.

I'd go with a S&W 640. It's hammerless, double action only, weighs a few ounces less than an SP-101, and like the SP-101, it's .38/.357.

The airweight guns like the 340 or 642 or just fine for carry, but they recoil is way, way too much for a first gun. It won't be any fun to shoot for her, and if it's a first gun she's going to need a ton of practice.

This has been my experience too, but just this one time I managed to take the OP's context as a given, then go from there.

Best advice I can give is to get her started shooting a .22 pistol. Then move up from there.

There's lots and lots of 9mm pistols that are easy to shoot, break down, clean and carry.

Kel-Tec P32 or P3-AT. Small, easily concealable, and not too hard to fire. If she likes that, then move her up to a 9mm of some kind.
