A newbie says 'HELLO' ! ! !
Hello Out There: New to the FORUMS
At a young 71 years of age. I guess I picked the right handle. Im A Fossil
Still love hunting Chucks in S Central PA. I just cashed in my lil' .17 HMR for a .204 Ruger. I just loved that lil' .17, but when you mature (old is not in my vocab) crawling that last 75yds to make the RIGHT shot is doable (you get what I mean, ouch & yikes) the .204 seems to fit. Yes youngins' the hills do get steeper.
I was looking 22-250, but in consideration of the dairy farms I hunt, I wanted less BOOM. The dairymen like that.
Your thoughts----and I am not thin skinned----need input----may go back into reloading.
Thanks, A Dinosaur-----Oooooops ! ! I meant Fossil JohnLast edited by ImAfossil; December 19th, 2011 at 08:17 PM.

Re: A newbie says 'HELLO' ! ! !
Welcome Fossil. My buddy is 66/67 and he hunts just as hard as you do for chucks, fox, and yodies. He exclusively uses a 22-250 for everything, including deer.
He hunts mostly on farms in Dauphin county but let me tell ya, he ain't afraid of getting some mud on his pants or ticks on his balls.
If you hunt as hard, then you've lived a damn good life enjoying nature and all she has to offer.
I've never had a a .17, .204, or 22-250 so I can't give ya any advice on them. Just keep on stroking my Friend and again, Welcome!

Re: A newbie says 'HELLO' ! ! !
Well Welcome to the forum it's fun to interact with these guys. We do have a rule around here though, and the rule is if there are no pictures it didn't happen. So whenever there is a good day a field and you come on here and tell us about the 350 yard shot on a ground grizzly, there has to be a picture to back it up. (or at least a picture of the tail) where we used to hunt the farmer would make us put the tails on the tractor just for proof.
Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading.

Re: A newbie says 'HELLO' and THANKS ! !
A-5 PICS you say ! ! ! To all thanks for the welcome
The 350 yarder with R / L 30 mph'r a blowin' --- That lil'.17 HMR --- Piece of cake.
You may have to click on the thumb to enlarge, untill I can figure out the picture size system.
In my former life I was an accountant. We used an abacus (BC). For the youngins' BC = Before Calculator, not the BIG GUY ABOVE.
But again, (there always has to be a but) it was the RIGHT shot. A tad under 350, like 110 yds no wind

Re: A newbie says 'HELLO' ! ! !
Welcome to PAFOA.
You should be just fine with the .204.
.17 Remington is another fine cartridge to reach out and touch some chucks and keep the boom down to a reasonable level, (if you're into reloading).
But you already made the choice for the .204 and I don't think you'll find anyone who'd say you made a bad choice.
I don't have a short temper, I just have a quick reaction to bullshit.

customloaded is spot on--TICKS below
Crawlin' around in the mud, I always check below the belt.
CL is right about the ticks on your SCROTI. I have seen that movie before.
Hold on. Is SCROTI plural ?? Meaning ; 1 in each bag makes 2, or is 2 to a bag, making 4 ---- At my age it matters not, but it does mean knowledge. Us old guys have forgotten more than most young guys will ever learn.
What is important, the method of detaching the critter. My DW is an expert and I caution using a lit cigarette. It does work, but giving the critter a nice home, may be a better option.

Sooo...do you still remember the day the Chinese announced that gun power was invented? You couldn't have been more than 9 or 10 then.
