Re: Asteroid Coming Awfully Close To Earty
Scary also because of the late discovery. Not that that matters: We have no defenses in place other than theoretical ones, such as reprogramming and launching an ICBM, which we have no idea of the effectiveness of (and won't happen anyway - can you imagine congress coming together on this? Please.)
This bad boy (2007 TU24..the one in your link) is even bigger than Apophis, which is the asteroid that will get way too close on Friday, April 13th, 2029 and may make a return trip on the same day on 2036. WOW.
Apophis is ~250m and 2007 TU24 is ~ 300m.NEED should never enter into a discussion about RIGHTS

Is TU24 the one that is supposed to crash into Mars late January, 2008? I haven't heard anything about it...

Re: Asteroid Coming Awfully Close To Earty
if this is the one i think it is, teh disco channels have been showing several programs on it over the last year or so.
iirc the first trip will miss by only several hundred thousand miles. there's also a window that if it passes through, will impact the second time around.
it's large enough to end most life on earth with in the first couple of days after impact, the resulting ice age would finish most everything else.
there are several invisioned plans in the works.....blowing it up isn't one of them.
moving it, slowing it or speeding it up are the front runners.it's only metal, we can out think it....
