Re: Stock finish
You're welcome.
Post some pics when you're done.
I have to take a few pics of the walnut AK stock I got from Ironwood's "wood pile".
i just finished it last week with Tung oil only. Not my best, but its a WASR beater that will probably get turned into a post-sample beater. Looks better than the crap that came on it LOLHGW, llc ~ Title 1 & NFA sales/manufacturing ~ Transfers - Title 1 $20 - NFA $50

Re: Stock finish
I'm a little late to the party, but here's my old SKS (kinda miss it) that I "refinished"...
I'll try to find a better photo, but unless you've read what I've posted elsewhere, I doubt you'd ever guess what I finished it with.
ETA: More pics...
Go ahead and guess.
Did you say "Ballistol"?
I didn't think so.
After I disassembled the rifle and soaked everything in mineral spirits to remove the cosmoline, the stock was left looking "whitish" in color from the "paint remover" doing its thing. I remembered reading that Ballistol was used for ooodles of different uses and decided to rub some on the wood.
I don't know if there was still some original stain left in the wood or not, but the Ballistol "restored" it to a very similar appearance as it looked prior to being soaked in thinner. I wiped it all down, let it soak in, then repeated. It stunk for a while (Ballistol smells funky to me), but otherwise, it looked great - no topcoat ever needed. I hate "shiny" on milsurp and this turned out just right for my tastes.
I wonder if anyone even knows what Ballistol IS... lolLast edited by Emptymag; October 19th, 2011 at 08:37 PM.

Re: Stock finish
I've used Birchwood Casey Tru Oil on several guns and was really happy with the results.

Re: Stock finish
ah, the days of getting an entire crate of SKS slathered in cosmo for less than $70 a gun and cases of Wolf for $80.
We had built a wooden box big enough to hold to two SKSs and line it with landscaping plastic and filled it with kerosine and mineral spirits and made a redneck parts washer. tossed the entire gun in and sloshed the box around.HGW, llc ~ Title 1 & NFA sales/manufacturing ~ Transfers - Title 1 $20 - NFA $50
