Default Cast your vote to help me pick an AK...

Ok...I've taken care of my AR bug with my inbound Colt LE 6920 and now I need to get my first AK...while I can. I've seen these options available online and I don't know much about the flavors of AKs yet so would appreciate your input.
    thanks

Well, to be specific; a WASR hi-cap. True foreign-made East EU-built semi-AK that was 922'd by CIA. All new stuff, not a parts AK.

And don't get caught up in the dimples crap; the vaunted SAIGAs don't have 'em either.

I said Romy, Though most AK nuts think they're shit, They really aren't any worst than most AK's. It will still shoot when you pull it out of the quicksand just like any other AK. It's very popular thus ensuring part replacement for sometime to come.

The Yugo is another Excellent choice but not for everyone, I actually prefer my Romys over the Yugo and then there's that interchangeability issue with Yugos. But they are built to withstand a Ground Zero Nuclear blast and keep on shooting.

    Piste,

Are these sight unseen? Or do you have the choice between rifles on the rack? Any of the choices would be fine as long as you could vet them firsthand. It more depends on how your particular rifle was put together and by whom than the models your picking from.

    Here is mine

One point that was mentioned that needs emphasis on the Romy's - which includes the factory-built WASRs for $300. +/-50.00; because they are pretty much "standard" AKM, pretty much any AKMhandgrips, PGs, and butts swap out easily (underfolder excluded).

You can go from standard AKM look to Romy G look (w/wout S/folder), to "Bulgarian poly look" with a screwdriver.

Don't like the less-than-Valmet finish on your WASR? A minute with a Scotchbrite and some cold-blue - viola; batttlefield pickup.

Really like my Yugos, but I can change the looks of my WASRs around to suit the mood.

    Nice choice on the Colt.

The Romanians are a roll of the dice, many will run perfectly and many will have issues due to poor QC. Hand-selection is the name of the game for Romanian guns. If you can get your hands on the SAR series guns they are superior to the WASR series.

Yugo's are nice, but they usually don't have chrome-lined barrels and also the buttstocks can be hard to get used to.

For a slightly higher price point you can get a Vector AKM clone which should serve you very well.
