Definitely go with an arsenal rebuilt GI Inland. It will be the most economical (because Inland is the most common maker) and will be all GI parts. You can usually find one in good shape for $600 delivered (if you have your C&R) on gun forums such as: http://forums.thecmp.org/index.php

The older commercial versions are often made with parts that are not GI spec and not always interchangeable with GI parts. You can sometimes find a commercial carbine for a couple hundred less than GI but personally I'd stay away from them.

Then you have the current crop of import carbines being sold at big box stores. They're retailing at $700 or more for guns that have seen better days, plus the import mark on the barrel will hurt its resale value.

    Good luck!

    /\ /\ what he said.

I lucked out and stumbled into an estate sale of an M1 carbine collector. I ended up picking up a couple for way.... less then what they should have gone for. Kept the one I really liked and sold the other ones pretty quickly.

The only non-GI M1 carbine to absolutly steer clear of is the Universal brand.

They were made in the 60's, subpar parts, some internal changes (2 recoil springs compared to one in a GI) and some of the parts don't interchange.

    Avoid Universal!!!

    Just remember...Universal is not!

Keeping that in mind the Plainfield Machine Company (PMC) work great and accept all GI parts.

Respectfully, no they don't. I'm a M-1 Carbine armourer and both the Plainfields and Ivor Johnsons are very difficult to fit GI parts to. Some of the earlier riflles are a bit more accepting of GI parts but the later rifles are not. I generaly don't work on any generation of them for this reason.

However the Plainfields and Ivor Johnsons are decent rifles for what they are. I heartily second the notion that Universals are junk.

Go with a good, used GI issue. Even if it has an import mark, if the price is right, and in good condition, it will serve you well.

If need be I can look it over for you at a gun show sometime.

    Good luck.

Unless you find one at a yard sale for 50 bucks, the run with it!

Well that's your opinion, sorry to hear that. I have an early and later versions and both accept GI parts without any problem. Plus over the years you are the first to make that claim. I even use a registered trigger pack in one of them and it runs so sweet. Keeping that in mind, I would never turn down a Plainfield.
