Default How close are the US and Iran to accidental war ??

It appears a navy ship did fire on the Iran speedboat in December

That was an "over the bow" warning shot. Not "on" the Iranian boat. ...there is a major difference. It is customary to fire over the bow or away from the other when trying to avoid conflict. If our navy really wanted to or did fire on that boat - it would have been a new fish habitat. You just dont approach any country's naval vessels unannounced and with threatening posture - you will receive a shot across your bow if there is enough time, if there isn't you will get fire on. Our Coast Guard will fire across our own people's bow if you fail to stop at request or approach threateningly.

As to accidental war, the Iranians are trying to provoke action to justify some sort of attack, whether cowardly terroristic or militarily(with honor). I'm not sure how close we are. The tension is high though. Iran has been a thorn in our ass since the late '70s, well deserving of a good ass beating just for the entertainment factor. It is rather stupid for them to do so, they would never win a "war". But I'm sure the following postwar conflict would mirror what goes on in Iraq with the civilian bombings and such.

Exactly right. Reminds me of the wife who says to the husband to be careful with the gun so you don't accidentally shoot anybody. Husband replies, don't worry honey nobody will get shot, accidentally

You are correct, Rocket....there is no "accidental"war. The only thing I think is stopping ol' Georgie from sending troops into Iran right now, is the fact that they are already spread WAY too thin. I think he realizes that sending people in now would be a mistake until we get this Iraq and Afghanistan shit straightened out.

And Iran knows that, too. Which is exactly why they're being bold now.
