Re: What did you buy yourself today (Photo thread)...
OUTstanding. Congratulations! My favorite lever-action action in my favorite lever-action chambering. Wickedly accurate. I use Moyers cast bullets 265 gr RNFP in .380" diameter in Starline "thinwall" cases. My Marlin 38-55 "Cowboy" rifles (both octagon, one at factory-length and one shortened to 18" by a previous owner) both have tight chambers and large bore diameters (yours probably will not have that problem) requiring large diameter bullets for bore fit, and thin brass in order to chamber with the .380" bullets. That combination really shoots in the Marlins, and fortunately also in the Cimarron 1894 20" carbine, and the Winchester/Miroku pistol-gripped half-octagon 24" Sporting Rifle.
Naturally you need to work up your own loads, but low 30s grams of 3031 under those Moyer 265s work well for full-house loads, and 13 gr of Unique under the same bullet for no-recoil plinking loads. Both offer exceptional accuracy.
Again, congratulations on being the next family caretaker of that beautiful rifle.

This rifle doesn't seem to have the "oversized bore + small throat" issue that Marlin had under H&R's ownership(H&R Target Rifles had same issue). Ballard type rifling instead of Marlin/H&R microgroove.
I'm not sure who made the barrel(definitely not Marlin/H&R), but I know my uncle chambered it on his lathe. The bullets he gave me(and the loaded ammo) are Meister Bullet Co. 245gr .377" pn# MB-38-557. They shot pretty good, got dingers at 50yd off-hand on steel silhouette shaped target with a heavy rifle and low blood sugar shakes. My uncle said he thinks the gun shoots to the right a hair, but I didn't notice. ..if it does, probably just the alignment of the sights. He set it up with a Lyman globe front and a peep in the rear only adjustable for elevation. I might have to drift the front over once I set up on a rest to really see how she shoots.
As for loads, I don't recall the amount of 3031 that he mentioned. But he did tell me the exact thing you said about Unique, 13gr - that is shot them very well. ...soft shooting and fun.
He said he wanted me to take care of her for the next 40-50 years. ...I was thinking at the moment to myself, "how old does he expect me to live to???" lol When the day comes, it will be passed back over to one of his sons(if they want it), or to one of their kids.RIP: SFN, 1861, twoeggsup, Lambo, jamesjo, JayBell, 32 Magnum, Pro2A, mrwildroot, dregan, Frenchy, Fragger, ungawa, Mtn Jack, Grapeshot, R.W.J., PennsyPlinker, Statkowski, Deanimator, roland, aubie515

Okay, I swear I didn't intend this, but I saw a PCC in 45acp today and seeing as I got a new 45 for Christmas this just seemed right. That's how I'm explaining it to the Mrs anywho.

Yeah
I've been considering it for a while. In all honesty my dad asked if building an AR in 45acp was doable and when I looked into it, this seemed more reasonable actually. Bonus is you can get caliber conversion kits for it to 9 and 40 also. Now I just gotta find some of the big stick G21 mags and decide what optic to put on it. Probably going to mount a TR25 I have laying around to test it out. Going to get a sig Romeo or primary arms dot at some point for something permanent.
