Suspect steals cruiser, crashes, then escapes
Someone forgot to ALWAY WATCH THE HANDS
TAMPA -- Hillsborough County deputies are looking for a man who led officers on a wild, Hollywood-style chase late Thursday.
It almost reads like a movie script:
Deputy Kevin Bennett was on patrol about 6 p.m. Thursday when he saw a motorcycle driver speeding and doing wheelies west on Gunn Highway.
The deputy followed the driver into the Logan Gate subdivision and tried to stop him.
Another deputy, John Footman, was in the area and joined in the pursuit. The motorcycle driver tried to do a U-turn in a yard but lost control.
Both deputies got out of their patrol cars and tried to subdue the driver. While the deputies were attempting to handcuff the suspect, he pulled out pepper spray and sprayed both deputies in the face.
The deputies managed to handcuff the suspect and put him inside a marked patrol car.
Hillsborough County Fire Rescue was dispatched to the scene to treat the deputies for the effects of the pepper spray. While the deputies were being treated, two other deputies arrived on scene.
The suspect was complaining of chest pains while he was in the backseat of the patrol car. Another deputy, Henry Alvarez, helped the suspect out of the vehicle so he could get medical help.
Deputies say the suspect pushed a Fire Rescue person aside and jumped into the driver's seat of the deputy's patrol car.
Deputy Alvarez jumped into the driver's seat in an attempt to grab the keys out of the ignition. Deputy Footman gave chase on foot. Deputy Alvarez was dragged about 75 feet before falling from the car.
Deputy Footman tried to stop the vehicle in a similar manner before it hit a pole. Footman then fell from the vehicle.
The suspect continued to drive the patrol car through Logan Gate Park where he slammed through 3 fences near the back of the park before jumping out of the car when it hit an embankment.
A short time later, the Sheriff's office got a call from someone saying their Chevy pickup truck was stolen. Deputies believe the suspect was able to escape in the stolen truck.
Deputy Alvarez was sent to the hospital with back pain, but Deputy Footman was not hurt.
The truck is described as a maroon 1990 Chevy pickup truck with dual wheels. The motorcycle and pepper spray were confiscated as evidence which belongs to the suspect.
He is identified as Walter John Brois, III and has outstanding warrants in Hillsborough, Pasco, Pinellas, and Orange counties.
A search is now underway.Last edited by fultonCoShooter; January 12th, 2008 at 08:29 PM.

WOW, now if only that jack-ass could put that much effort and determination into finding a job, and setting his life straight, all would be right with the world.
