Questions: taking my son on his first shoot tomorrow

I got him a brand new .22 rifle. I've never had a new gun before. Do I just clean it regular, or does it need a more thorough out-of-the-box cleaning?

He is a lefty. Should I try to teach him to shoot as a righty? If not, how do you lefties avoid flying brass?

How do you find the dominant eye again?

Give it a thorough cleaning before shooting. Some of the protective oils they package the guns with will collect dirt and fouling like a bug lite collects insects on a dairy farm. Then properly lube it before shooting.

Let him pick up the gun and see which shoulder he puts it to, then go from there.

To find eye dominance, have him look at a far object through his hands like the picture below. Then as his eyes are fixed on the object, have him pull his hands back while maintaining fixation on the object. The eye they go back to that is the only one looking through is the dominant eye.
