Default Need some opinions -- .22 vs .22 Mag

    All,

I need some expert advice. I'm looking at getting a rifle purely for target shooting. Something that I can take to the range and hone my skills.

For this I've been considering a .22. I good friend suggested that I consider a .22 mag as it has a little more "omph" and is a "bit more fun to shoot". I'm not sure what the cost difference between the two rounds.

    Any advice for me?

Quite a difference in cost. .22 LR is significantly cheaper.

To hone your skills 22 LR is just as accurate and you can shoot more.

I recommend the CZ 452/453 series.

.22 LR is WAY cheaper than .22 Mag. It is just as fun to shoot.....well, it's more fun to shoot cause you're not thinking about how much that last mag of ammo cost you to blow off. Go 22LR.

If your considering the 22 Mag. then I would also consider a 17 HMR. Of the 4 I own I'm still impressed with the out of the box accuracy of the 17 HMR. As Gunrunner said, ammunition price is going to be a big difference. Magnum rounds come with the magnum price.

I have a Marlin 882 .22mag and love shooting it, but a .22lr rifle would be great fun which is why I also got a Ruger 10/22.

Just to throw in my 2 cents

.22 Long Rifle All the Way. It's cheaper, easier to find and there is a far more wider range of guns/manufacturers to choose from that chamber it.

    Good Luck

ps: your 'Friend' dosen't by chance have a .22mag that he is looking to sell does he?

Thanks for all the input. My friend doesn't have a .22 mag for sale, but it is the only .22 he owns.

Now aside from the recommendation by Lycanthrope for the CZ does anyone have a recommendation of not only rifle (I'd like to keep it under $400, I'm open to new or used) but also a scope recommendation?

The Ruger 10/22 ($160ish) is a great rifle and has a host of aftermarket accessories including items to increase it's already great accuracy.

+1 on the Ruger 10/22 I love it. I've got 2 .22lr rifles and one pistol. They by far get most of my range time simply because I can afford to shoot them.

I love loading up a 25 round mag for the 10/22 and just banging away at a target. ) Wish I didn't have to go to work in an hour.
