Need Flintlock pistol ID'd
Anyone ever seen anything like this? I don't have much info on it other than an 1818 stamping.

Re: Need Flintlock pistol ID'd
My guess is it's a trade pistol from the British East India Company -- I think the marking on the lock forward of the hammer, a lion holding a crown, is the mark of the Company. The stock looks a little odd for a John Company gun -- maybe some India or Middle Eastern/Asia craftsman just used a Company lock and barrel to make his own gun?
Anyway, I don't know enough to offer an authoritative opinion. You might want to post the pix over on the forum at antiqueguns.com: http://www.antiqueguns.com/phorum/list.php?6. There's a gentleman named Bill Curtis who posts there frequently who knows more about antique flintlocks -- especially British and other non-U.S. guns -- than just about anyone I've ever known.Last edited by shiloh; July 18th, 2011 at 03:16 PM.

Re: Need Flintlock pistol ID'd
Necro thread comes back to life! Yeah, my opinion's changed a bit after taking another look. It's most likely a "Khyber Pass" copy of a British East India Company pistol, made for the tourist trade, probably not an antique one, even. The lock markings are crude in comparison to true original EIC guns, and the lockplate lacks the decorative border of an original. The internal lock screws protruding through the lockplate also look like they've been hammered flat and ground down a bit, originals were finished much more smoothly. The stock is typical decorative art of the Khyber region; you can see other examples of you google "Khyber Pass flintlock." But I'm by no means an expert. Best bet is to post pictures over on the British Militaria Forum and ask those guys. They know what they're talking about.
