Default On getting old and needing to see >100 yds

Took my kids to the range, we had a great time. One thing became apparent: I am having trouble with iron sights at 100 yards. I can see the paper fine, but ask me to hit certain quadrants and forget it. The Marlin I brought has glass on it and I shot that well. The AR just had BUIS and a red dot. Did ok 50yds with it, 100yds I was shooting at the paper in the direction of the target.

My solution was to attach a Weaver tri rail on my flat top and mount a Bushnell 3x9 Trophy scope, then dovetail the red dot coax to the scope. The reason I went with the tri rail instead of just mounting everything to the flat top itself was to give me ample clearance to the charging handle.

Havent had time to shoot this yet, but I am able to maintain cheek-weld when transitioning from scope to red dot.

I just have the odd feeling that this looks a lil "busy". Am hoping to post some pics and get feedback when I get back from work. Would like to know others solutions.

Don't feel too bad or too old. I gave up on iron sights along time ago. My vision is very poor and I'm still a youngster. I even dumped my old 3x9 power scopes for deer hunting and went with 4x14. I'm running a 5.5x22 on my bench gun now for medium to longer range shooting. Remember if you can't see it you can't hit it. Do whatever you need to to keep you on target at the distance you want to shoot.

Thumbs up Re: On getting old and needing to see >100 yds

You're getting astigmatism, just like I did at 41.

Stick with the Aimpoint and its 2 MOA dot. The smaller the dot, the smaller the bloom, & the better your accuracy.

I have trouble seeing the paper, much less the bull at 100 yds. But this past weekend I was very happy that I was able to see and hit a bowling pin offhand with iron sights on an AR at approximately 125 yds. It is a matter of contrast, size, and what day it is.

I was also having trouble seeing distances, not just iron sights, signs at night, details, etc. I actually went to the eye doctor and got prescription glasses that I can use while riding the motorcycle. So I tried them while shooting, and I'll be @#**$%, they work great. I got photo changing lenses so they also work in sun and night. Perhaps a visit to the eye doctor may help.

Thanks all for responses. I had a customer visit before getting home, so didnt get to the house till late. Will try to get pic of set up tonight.

I think I may go for a new set of glasses. My last set are about 3 years old, but I can see fine at night as well as road signs. My issue is when I am looking to get the bull and just vaguely make out the paper! I hate that! I used to have 20/15 vision until an eye injury, and with correction have 20/20 (until I go back and see where I am now), so this frustrates me
