"The eastern mountain lion was officially declared extinct earlier this year,..." oh the irony.

    from the linked story

"The eastern mountain lion was officially declared extinct earlier this year, prompting authorities to suspect the animal spotted in the urban jungle of the New York City metropolitan area, had either escaped or was released from captivity.

The closest confirmed population of mountain lions is in Missouri, half way across the country."
Too often we enjoy the comfort of opinion, without the discomfort of thought.

If an animal is declared 'extinct' there shouldn't be any population of them according to the definition of 'extinct'.

Doesn't matter if it was in captivity or there's some half way across the country, if one is left alive, it's not extinct.

Lightbulb Re: Mt. Lion killed in Connecticut....

So....I have to fillout forms and have the serial # documented to buy and own a deadly weapon that can't move, escape or kill on it's own free will but there is no registration, licensing, tattooing or regulatory investigations on owning a deadly pet that can escape, wander and kill at will?!?!?

And as Streaker said, extinct is EXTINCT. Article doesn't SAY WILD POPULATION. It just says eastern Mountain Lion. I guess then since they are extinct they are no longer protected. Shoot them as you see them boys!

Considering a home range of 500 square miles, development and deforestation, there's no reason to believe they can't end up anywhere at any time in this country.

I would like to point out that Bigfoot, Leprechauns and Unicorns are all extinct.

Red face Re: Mt. Lion killed in Connecticut....

Like Spotted Owls that nest in K-Mart signs, this mountain lion apparently forget to listen to the enviromentalists, who said he COULDN'T live this close to NYC.

Me, my buddy, and his dad all have seen them in our area. I don't know why game commission denies their existence.
