M1911, 9mm or .38 Super?
So recently with the M1911's 100's anniversary I noticed a lot of talk around here about the pistol and the other cartridges the M1911 can fire. We have lots of discussion about the M1911 in 9mm but little discussion about it chambered in .38 Super. I did some reading on the round and discovered it is quite an effective round, more so than even 9mm. Developed in the late 20's, was effective against car bodies/armor of the time and I believe it's a higher velocity round than 9mm. So what's everyone's take on the round? Experiences? Stories? I know the disadvantage to this round compared to the 9mm: It's not as available and cost a bit more. Thankfully online retailers seem to fix much of these issues. I see RIA is selling a 5" Blued .38 Super M1911 online for between $360-$400 which seems like a sweet deal and after what I have read about the round I think I am getting an urge to buy this pistol, funds pending as usual.
Not to say the M1911's in 9mm aren't cool but most people already own a ton of 9mm pistols and having a 3rd, 4th, or 5th pistol in 9mm probably gets boring. So what would you chose? Based on my research I would chose the .38 Super since it seems to have more power and it's a bit more unique.Last edited by LifeInPa; June 12th, 2011 at 05:10 PM.

Me, I'd get the .38Super. It was designed for the 1911. And it has a little more oomph than the 9mm Parabellum.

I don't reload, so 9mm for me. Actually, I already have a couple chambered in 9mm. I want a 1911 chambered in .357 Sig.

I guess I'm old school they just don't seem like 1911s unless they are chambered for 45acp

Re: M1911, 9mm or .38 Super?
While I feel the .38 Super may be the more effective and/or effecient round, I voted 9mm for ease of ammo availability and cost (which you stated).
Not to thread jack, but this is the reason I don't own a .357 sig. An awesome round that has very respectable ballistics, etc, etc, but I have trouble finding ammo here and it is always more expensive. YMMV.
These "oddball" rounds usually have *something* going for them but you have to weight cost versus return for your chosen usage. Plinking for these not-so-common rounds can be expensive.
Also, while owning the 3rd, 4th, 5th gun in any given caliber may be boring, there is nothing like buying ammo in bulk to save money and/or having a shit ton of reloading "stuff" for one caliber. My opinion, of course.....
Alot of IRC peeps use the .38 super in their guns..... just sayin'Last edited by FLICK; June 12th, 2011 at 09:15 PM.

If it ain't .45, .38 Super is the next best thing. A .40 would be pretty cool, though!

a 9mm 1911 is just wrong. while a 38super 1911 is just cool.

Re: M1911, 9mm or .38 Super?
I am a bit new to shooting ( 9/2010), but from what I have seen at a pistol club I shoot action pistol at has not been good for the 38 super. This one guy there has a highly custom gun that was like 2k and I have seen it jam at least once every other time we shoot. I have seen the 45 1911 jam as well.
I have not heard of the 1911 9mm jamming much, but my solution is simple. Go GLOCK. I have yet to see a jam not ammo related.

Re: M1911, 9mm or .38 Super?
.38 supers are semi-rimmed, and from what i've read, they can be very finicky. A 9mm, on the other hand, is a rimless design and lends itself to easy feeding. I would pick the 9mm.
