M1 Garand questions

A friend of mine has offered me an M1 Garand for a good price. What should I check on the rifle? I don't care if it has matching serials, etc. I just want to know if it is in good condition and OK to shoot. Also, can anyone recommend a gunsmith in SW PA who could look it over for me?
