Good choice on wanting a 1911, i recently purchased my first one and already looking for the next one. No one can tell you whats the best, its all an opinion based on what works for as far as price, size, feel etc..Best bet would be to handle some different ones and shoot them if possible to see what you like the most.

But for starters, check other threads they have info on different brands and you can also check out http://forums.1911forum.com/, lots of 1911 specific info

I like them all, but I carry and shoot a Citadel 1911 A1 FS. for me it was priced right, had the trigger pull i liked. and was tight fitted, the sights weren't to my liking but they are changeable, I plan to up grade them soon. My next one may be a SA 1911 S/S not sure yet . Just to many to chose from out there.

Best 1911 brand for the money is the Rock Island Armory, IMO.

I have two, both 5" parkerized "Govt Models", one in 45 ACP and the other in 9mm. Both have been solid, reliable performers and scary accurate. From a sandbag on the bench, the 45 ACP outshoots my Series 70 Gold Cup in terms of group size at 15 and 25 yds. Both are really tight, well-assembled, with excellent trigger pulls out of the box. I've owned three Springfield "Mil-Spec" 1911s that needed trigger work to get the pulls below 4 to 4.5 lbs. One had a creepy pull that broke betw. 8 and 9 lbs. My RIAs break at just around 3 to 3.5 lbs. Maybe heavy for target work, but just right for a knockabout 1911, IMO.

I bought the 45 used for $290 OTD and picked up the 9mm new in Feb '11 for $450 OTD. I have 800 or so rounds through the 45 and NOT ONE failure of any sort. I have maybe 200 through the 9mm and it's been equally accurate and reliable. Both shoot POI to POA at 25 yds with factory-performance ammo in 230 gr and 115 gr bullet weights in the respective cartridges.

You can spend more $$$, but it doesn't mean you'll get a better-performing gun.

For $1000, why just get one? Unless you only want one which is absolutely fine btw. But I would get two different ones for that price and who knows you may want to keep them both or trade one towards something else. I just picked up a GI model RIA for $402 and will be picking up the Officers model in due time and both will run me a couple hundred less than your price point.
