Re: Wondering about Chambersburg and area.
The one near Mercersburg is his "birth place".
I think he has only one birth place.

Re: Wondering about Chambersburg and area.
President James Buchanan's birthplace is 39d 52'10.37" N, 77d 56' 49.38" W, at the village of Cove Gap, three miles or so west of Mercersburg, off PA Route 16.
His (post-Presidential) home, "Wheatland", is at1120 Marietta Ave., near Lancaster PA, about 90 miles East of Chbg.
There are four world-class trout streams here. One, the Falling Spring - Which Dwight Eisenhower liked a lot - flows through Chambersburg. The Big Spring, the LeTort, and the Yellow Breeches are all within a half-hour drive.
Antietam Battlefield is only a half-hour drive south.
Chambersburg also has the house where "Ossawattomie" (John Brown) stayed while planning his raid on the Federal Arsenal at Harper's Ferry before the Civil War. One of the oldest Jewish burial grounds in the colonies is here. Nearby are a number of fort-sites from the French&Indian War - colonial frontier forts. (Fts. Loudon, McDowell, McCord, Waddell, and others were only a few miles apart all up and down the frontier line at the foot of the mountains.) Fort Chambers was the original settlement point for this city.
Here is a nice pdf:

And the Conocheague institute, which has lately become one of my favorite interests http://www.fortedwards.org/cwffa/conoc.htm is a living history museum of one of those forts. Truly a nice place to visit, though a couple miles southwest of Chambersburg proper.
The city was burned by Confederate Gen. John McCausland

Re: Wondering about Chambersburg and area.
I'm sure the OP respects all the info that we have supplied, but it sounds like there is limited time to see all the history that C-burg has to offer in one visit. Sticking with the topic, there is a lot of history that you can't imagine, to include the burning of Chambersburg by the confederates. Enjoy your limited time there. If you like beer check out Roy Pitts brewery, it's in an alley. There are also many nice restaurants. Our favorite is Aki Sushi and Japanese Steak House. Also, our neighbors' house is still for sale. It would be great to have a like minded person in our tiny valley. Enjoy your stay here and I hope you find the same respite that we have in this area.

I do appreciate it very much. I'm going to call some real estate offices this coming week. Your neighbors place sounds great but I'm not sure just how soon we will be able to buy and actually move as we have to sell her first. It's a matter of coordinating everything and it all depends on how we like the area (especially the wife, I think I'll like it just fine ;0) )

OK, we'll be in Chambersburg tomorrow probably around noon. Really looking forward to looking around with the wife and seeing the place first hand and talking to people. Wish me luck!

Re: Wondering about Chambersburg and area.
Well we had a very nice visit to Chambersburg. Everyone we spoke to were nice and very helpful. Spoke to Bob (Flash) and he gave me a lot of info. A very nice guy and I thank him!
We like the east and south side of the area and will concentrate on the Fayetteville, Shippensburg and Green Castle as well as possibly Carlisle. WE didn't get as far as Ortanna but we'll look at that area also.
Lots of homework still to do!
