Default Thoughts on sending in handgun "warranty" cards?

I am curious to how folks feel about this topic. Many/most of my new handgun purchases some with some sort of "registration" card that ...in theory anyway...would let the manufacturer contact me if any recalls, defects, etc. Some mask this around a "warranty registation" sort of requirement which we all learned in Law 101 that the any warranty offered by a manufacturer is NOT contingent in any way on the consumer sending in such card. Anywho...I'm thinking that there may be benefits to sending in such cards ("sans" any personal info they might ask for such as income..for their own marketing benefit). But wondering also if folks might think that someday Big Brother might subpoena Smith and Wesson to get this data....or something like that.

    Thanks

"Big Brother" doesn't have to, the PSP maintains a database of all handgun sales.

Mostly warranty cards are a marketing ploy. some companies sell the lists they compile.

I see no reason to send in any warranty card. Having been involved in several safety recalls in the appliance industry, I know that the warranty card info is only one way manufacturers have to find defective products. They use dealer records and news stories to find what they need to find.

As for "big brother" finding my guns, IIRC manufacturers and dealers must keep records establishing a paper trail for every gun sold for something like 20 years. If they want to find them...they will. I have no illusions that my gun inventory isn't available to the authorities.

I cannot speak for handguns, but power equipment companies use this for notifying consumers of recalls, and the like, as well as special offers and promotions.

To get warranty work done they do not have to be "registered" at the time of sale, but that will basically get done when we file the warranty if you do have a problem...

Keep in mind that sending in a warranty card never ensures 100% that you will be contacted by a manufacture when there is a recall. I bought a S&W 4506 new back in 1989 or 90 and I was never contacted about two recalled items, the magazines and the grip, even though I sent in the card.

Many of the manufacturers have it so you can sign your firearm of for it's warranty online. ...which is what I've done for those I could.

When I bought my XD I called springfield about the card. They told me I could just toss it out, I asked because the warrenty says its for the original purchaser and wondered if they needed this for that. They told me they do no verification as to original purchaser.

    lifetime warranty, no questions asked.

If I were inclined to send in the warranty information card, I would enclose it in an envelope first.
