Ingram convenience store clerk shoots would-be robber
By Milan Simonich, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
A convenience store clerk in Ingram shot and seriously wounded a knife-carrying robber this morning.
Ingram police Chief John Doherty said the clerk may have fired at the would-be thief inside and then outside the 7-Eleven store at 10 W. Prospect Ave.
"He shot the robber several times. I'm not sure how many," Chief Doherty said this afternoon in a telephone interview.
But the gunfire began in the store about 4:30 a.m. and then apparently continued outside, Chief Doherty said.
He declined to identify either the clerk or the robber. Chief Doherty said the would-be thief is 20 years old and the clerk is in his mid-20s.
Emergency crews transported the robber to Allegheny General Hospital, where he underwent surgery, Chief Doherty said.
He said the clerk may have had a less serious injury.
"I believe the clerk was cut," Chief Doherty said.
Chief Doherty said the preliminary investigation showed that the clerk had a permit to carry a firearm. He said he knew this particular clerk because he had been robbed previously and Ingram police investigated the case.
Allegheny County police will be the lead agency in the case and file any charges, Chief Doherty said.

This is really disturbing--7/11 has a history of firing people who are bright enough to be legally armed and act in these situations. I actually stopped patronizing them over this issue several years back, and hope this clerk does not lose his job over it.
This from the article linked above:
Chief Doherty said the preliminary investigation showed that the clerk had a permit to carry a firearm. He said he knew this particular clerk because he had been robbed previously and Ingram police investigated that case.
7-Eleven has had a no-weapons policy for store employees since the 1970s. Chief Doherty said he did not know whether the Ingram clerk violated a corporate rule by carrying his gun.
An employee at the 7-Eleven store in Ingram referred questions to a manager, who was not in yesterday.
Corporate offices of the Dallas-based chain were closed yesterday because of the Christmas holiday. But 7-Eleven executives at the corporate level have said that one weapon carried by a store employee was one too many.

He may have lost his job, but he might have saved his life. If I remember one of the forum members works for 7-11. Might be interesting to find the inside story.

Re: Score another one for the good guys
Glad to hear the clerk is OK.
Hope we find out if he keeps his job and if he does, what stance will 7-11 take on him remaining armed at work."Having a gun and thinking you are armed is like having a piano and thinking you are a musician" Col. Jeff Cooper (U.S.M.C. Ret.)

I hope he doesn't get fired. Sounds like he will though.
I didn't know that about 7-11 and now I do I will have to avoid them in the future."Do not take life too seriously. You will never get out of it alive." - Elbert Hubbard
