For that rifle with a twist rate of 1 in 12", you'll only be able to shoot bullets stably up to about 55 grains. Muzzle velocity will put you around 3600, with transonic region just past 600 yards with a decent bullet. Still, you'll be shooting small game, so high magnification will probably be desired. Something 20x or more on the high end... If you're on a budget, you could go for a Vortex Viper with a target dot or fine v-plex reticle. There are some Nikons in the same price range.

At 3600fps, a 60gr bullet at .851" long bullet will work fine with 1:12.4". Even a 70gr Nosler at .910" long only needs 1:11.6" twist at 3600fps, which would probably be enough twist rate for the long .224" bullet..

A 55gr at .810" only needs 1:13" at 3600fps. Which a .22-250 can push a 55gr slug 3800+fps if loaded right. At that velocity only a 1:13.4" twist is needed.

Millet LRS-1 and TRS-1 are great scopes in that price range.

Thanks for the detailed input. Best case, optimum bullet, etc - I recomputed using a 64 gr Berger Match Varmint (G1 BC of 0.294) at 3500 ft/s, giving a transonic boundary of around 800 yards in varying climate and altitude conditions. Berger states a 1 in 12" or faster twist for this bullet.

Although, being able to successfully predict wind drift at those ranges with these bullets is another story...
