.308 for 500 yards for around $900 Semi ??

I tried in other forums here to get responses on optics/boresight systems etc. and all I get is the rifle you chose STINKS for that range.

So here we go.

What rifle that is Semi-Auto (clip) that is .308 do you-all' recommend I buy for around $900 or so. I don't want a bolt.

I saw a Remington 740 in .308 which looks like a semi of sorts and has a 21+" barrell. Which I'm sure you would say is better than the Saiga .308 with 21.75" barrell in the other posts. I just looked it up an read it has a 4 rnd clip and aftermarket 10 rnd clips available. So people what about this model??

What kind of accuracy are you expecting?

I'd like to hit a soda can at 500 yards , but to more real (and avoid flaming) I'd be happy at 12" x 12" target/watermelon or so.

From the info I found. You would do better to purchase the Remington 750, because the 740 was discontinued in 1959. You won't get repeatable 500 yard shoots with this firearm. It is a Hunting rifle and not made for range work. Why do you not want a bolt action? The bolt action is still one of the best if not the best range gun. For 500 yard accurate shooting, you could get a AR-15 or AR-10 in 308. You need to reload and be very picky about you brass and bullets. There is now way that rifle should cost 900 I found it on Gun Broker for less then 400.

For a tack driver, I would highly suggest you get a bolt action. The accuracy factor is much better.

Now, with that said. I would suggest going with a Remington 700P, or what I have my eye on, a Remington 700 LTR. You'll be very happy, and you'll never look back.

I didn't say the Rem 740 was $900. I was just asking about it for L-range work. There is a few up on GB (740's) for $400-700 in alot of cals.

I don't like the bolt-action idea if I 'for example' have 30-50 incoming badguys coming at me and I got to pull the bolt back each time that would STINK.

I had a Bushmaster .223 and made a mistake of selling it NIB/NBF for $600 a few years back for RENT and it had the scope I mentioned and 1000 rounds of Fed. SLS .223 and some other goodies also. I had over $1400 into that. I won't do that again.

Would a DPMS Panther AR-10 .308 do this work I want????

A AR10 would be your best bet....alot more accuracy possible with that over the saiga.

If you are not law enforcement/military you should not be in the position to have 30-50 incoming badguys.

Oh, one other thing...you ever hear of the profession of sniping? They mostly use bolt guns...

Move your price up to $1000 and you want a DPMS LR-308.

They can found for high $900s. The ones I've seen have plenty of accuracy. The problem with the Remington is the two piece stock affects its accuracy. Accuracy Speaks makes a "chaise" type stock for the Remington, but for the price the DPMS is the better deal.

Well the reasoning is if I have to have 1 rifle.

1) I'd prefer lg. caliber
2) I'd prefer semi-auto vs. bolt

I may still consider the 700 Remington B/A when all is said and done. Yes, I know snipers use bolt actions and I also know they use AR-10's when that all they got with them.

On your other note. Cannot confirm or deny... Sound like the lost CIA tapes of late...

I think we have to be realistic here.
able to shoot 12"x12" (or let alone soda can) at 500yds repeatedly with semi-auto that is at $900 is going to be really really hard. infact, i don't think you can.

Accuracy is likee horsepower. It cost money, and lots of it.

hitting what your aiming out(that small) at 500yds is hard to do even with good bolt action rifle.
Semiauto you can buy around $900 that can actually hit something that small is going to be tough. Even some AR-10 type that you can get for around what you looking to spend - like DPMS LR308B AR-10, would be bone basic ridle that can fire .308. Its no tac driver. You'll be able to hit target at 500yds the size of volkswagen. Not soda can or 12"x12"

Not to mention scope for that kind of long shot cost pretty penny too

I think instead of worrying about 500yds, You prolly better off get AR15 (perhaps new 6.8SPC?) and practice from 100yds and work your way up.
Because AR15 with practice, good scope, good wind compensation, and little bit of luck, can hit something loong range faily accurately...

So it can be done. Or give up Semiauto, and go with bolt action rifle. 600yds, even if you miss, give you plenty of time to work the action for 2nd shot

BTW, I'm sure those aren't $900 AR either...
