Default shooting steel jacketed ammo AK 47

I have 200 rounds of what I assume is steel jackets for my AK. I can stick a magnet to the bullet. I didnt know that when I bought them, it was an impulse buy and they were 2 bucks for 10 rounds, so i bought some. Was this a stupid thing to buy? am I going to hurt my gun shooting some of these? Should I try to shoot through a car engine just for fun?

No it just means they probably used mild steel (see also SOFT, not super duper armor piercing) instead of lead for the core.

Also, it's fine. Shoot it up.

cool. if you scroll down on that link you provided, I bought a box of those blister packs. The stamps on the back (primer side) are (the top is 04, the bottom is 88), so, from what I read on that link, I have ammo from 1988. Its all dirty, but as long as it exits the barrel safely, Im happy. (and by dirty, I mean........my hands are covered in black crap from handling them). Thanks again for the info

If you are referring to that East German ammo, be aware that it is corrosive primed.

Be sure to thoroughly clean your rifle asap. You may also want to pour some water (some people use windex) down the bore and gas tube before leaving the range. This washes out the corrosive salts.

duely noted marinville. Thank you. I will do that before I leave the range, because I do believe it is corrosive ammo also. Since we are talking about corrosive primed......what does that mean exactly?

it means that the primer is made from Mercury salts, on most of these corrosive ammunition it is the primer that is the culprit not so much the ammo itself.

Your AK were designed to shoot metal jacketed ammo, it wont hurt anything , just clean it , thats all , the active ingredient in Windex is ammonia, ammonia is an antidote to mercury salts.

No nyman... Ammonia has nothing to do with salt. Water dissolves them.
