peep sight issues
As you can see below I shoot service rifle. I've noticed about a year ago I started having issues seeing through my peep sight.
When trying to focus on the front blade it looks like I'm looking through fuzz.
I had a .030 rear peep and opened it up to .042. I have burned it out and used tiny brushes. It looks clear to others but not me.
I'm not sure what to do. It my just be my eye lashes or my eyes.

Re: peep sight issues
this might seem like a dumb question but have you tried new shooting glasses or or a darker tint or a polerized lense. personal experiances have taught me that my open eye will get tired after a long day at the range and thats just from using the small muscles of you eye, some times all I need was a small break or a change in lense tint. also if your lense have small niks and scratches you could be getting unfavorable refractions of light entering you eye and with you eye being as focused as it would be as on a front site post this could be noticable. I'm not an eye expert but if the problem persist I'd say maybe see an eye doctor

Darken the front sight and try a different width up there.

Re: peep sight issues
What you describe as "fuzz" is usually caused by not enough light getting through the aperture. .030 is small, very few shooters use one that small. .042 is probably the most common I believe. I have used .038 and .042... currently have a .042 in because the .038 looked dark sometimes. Try not to go any bigger than .042... you need to stay small for depth of field. Do you wear glasses or have a lens in the rear sight? What size front sight?

Re: peep sight issues
Yes I do wear contacts and shooting glasses.
I have tried new lenses and with and out shooting glasses. I have darkened the front blade. I don't know how wide it is but it's a STD NM RRA.
I'm even having issues with reg 1MOA sights like my Garand.Owner Trigger Time LLc 01 FFL/NFA Saylorsburg, PA. Sales/Service/Transfers/Training

Re: peep sight issues
A peep/aperture sight works like the F stops on a camera; the higher the F stop number, the smaller the hole, the greater the depth of field, the more everything appears to be in focus, but the darker it gets. If you have or have access to a match grade rear sight with an adjustable aperture like an Anschutz, Walther, or even an old Redfield; look thru it and you will see how the fuzz fades as you close down the opening but it does get darker. If you have an old 35mm camera lock the lens open and move your F stop ring and you will see the same thing happen though the view finder. On bright, clear days, everyone narrows their adjustable aperture sights down because there is a lot of light and they have sharp, clear vision. The problem starts when it is early, late, foggy, or just a dark day; you have to open the sight up and some of the clarity goes away. Since you have to go with a fixed aperture for high power, I can only suggest that you consider looking through a number of sight apertures and go with the smallest one that is bright enough for you to see the 600 yard slow fire target well. I hope this helps.

Re: peep sight issues
I had a similar issue several years ago. It turned out I was diabetic and had developed a retina problem. If I wasn't a shooter, I might not have noticed it until it was much much worse. I could see just fine (or so I thought) until my center vision in my right eye was isolated. Then I couldn't see anything at all. Don't mean to go the "voice of doom" route, but have you seen your eye doc lately?

Re: peep sight issues
I would agree that it sounds like a vision problem. I've had similar issues in the past before I was diagnosed with an Astigmatism in my right eye.

Re: peep sight issues
Thanks for the great replies. Maybe I should see the eye doc again.

Re: peep sight issues
Generally, you get older you get more far sighted.
I'm nearsighted and sometimes have trouble focusing on the front sight because of my glasses.
Could be you are having the opposite problem?
