    Default A little disappointed

I have had the old Lyman cast bullet book for many years now. But was reading that the new Lyman 4th addition cast book had new information, loads, as well as Loads for molds other than Lyman. Now if you do not have a cast book, I would recommend it, and I have not read threw the entire book as of yet, And there are a few loads for none Lyman molds, I did see a couple for Lee and Saeco, and they have added a couple new loads, for the Lyman molds. I cannot put my finger on it, but there is also something I do not like about the way the book is formatted.
I am not saying this is a bad book, and from what I have read, this book dose seem to be less technical and more too the point, an easier read. But not the great improvement and new information I had hoped for. All in all if you do not have a cast bullet book it’s worth the $18.00.

Thanks for the info. If you have the last edition have you noticed much change in the loads you were using?

Just doing a quick check of the two books with two of the bullets I cast, one being the 9MM Lyman 356402, the old manual list loads for 12 different powders. The new manual only list 10 with the deletion of some older powders and the addition of Titegroup, 231, and Zip. The only change I noticed in the 9MM was for Bullseye, old manual 3.7 to 4.4. New manual 3.8 to 4.2. No real difference must have been powder lot tested.
But in the 45ACP Lyman Bullet 452374 the old manual list 12 powder loads, the new manual list 19, with the addition of Clays, Titegroup , WST as well as others. So this manual will make a good addition to my reloading Library, but not what I would call a must, if you already own a good cast bullet book.

Hornady, can you check something for me? Look up cast bullet number 452374 and let me know what info it has listed for it. Lyman has their 225gr RN listed in their old manual. They have since come out with a 180gr HP and gave it the same number. I have come up with my own recipe for it but had little to no info to go on. The worst part is that when I called Lyman I was told I could use the same specs.

The Lyman 180 Gr, 452374 HP in the new manual has an OAL of 1.190. If you let me know what powders you are using I will let you know what the Min and Max are, I load the 225 Gr, RN, with an OAL of 1.272. I use 231 for the 225Gr, Bullet, the new manual, Min 4.0 with a max of 5.8 with 231 For the 225 Gr, But with the 180 Gr, HP, the Min, is 6.1 Gr, and a Max of 6.7 with 231.
So I would say Lyman was being conservative with saying the 225 Gr, data would be safe.
If I remember correctly do they also refer to the 452374 HP as the Devastator?

I am using 7.0gr of Power Pistol with an OAL of 1.235. The HP is called the devastator.

Sorry they don’t list power pistol for the 452374 HP, they have loads for this bullet in Titegroup, 700X, Bullseye, Red dot, N320, W231, Zip, and Unique with an OAL of 1.190.
As a Reference point they do show Power pistol in the Lyman 452460 200 Gr, bullet with a Min, of 6.3 Gr, at 816 FPS, pressure of 13,300 and a max of 7.0 Gr, 919 FPS, and pressure of 16,800.
If you should decide to change to one of the above powders let me know.

I have been using 6.7 grains of Power Pistol with 200 grain Lee TL SWC's, in .45 Auto with very accurate results. Here are the chronograph numbers using a ProChrono Digital... Taken right from my log:

SIG P220 6.7 grains Power Pistol Lee 200 TL LLA CCI 300
    883 872 848 858 890 Avg 870 ES 42 SD 17 * Very Accurate

Groups at 15 yards from a rest are nearly one ragged hole, and I feel confident my 1911 would be just as accurate with an added 50 fps more speed as well.

After adding a little more tin to the mix, I got the weight down to 200gr. That is where I got the load data for it, from the 452460. As Guns N'at said, it is an accurate powder. I have not put it through a chrony but it shoots where I aim and functions in my 1911 just fine.
