Default Thinking of a new pistol, need some thoughts and advice...

Currently, my daily CCW alternates between a Gen 4 Glock 17 (9mm) and a Ruger LCP (.380). The Glock goes along most of the time, with the LCP for NPE-type destinations and/or more formal dress.

I am in the process of selling two other handguns to turn into a new "toy".

Not interested in a caliber war, but I am satisfied with what I have for two-legged critters.

The only time I don't feel the 9mm is sufficient, is when in the woods, either for a stroll or backpacking for a few days.

With that said, I am kicking around the idea of the following:

    • G21SF - RTF2. I can then buy a G20 slide and mags, and have both a .45 and 10mm
    • Mini RDS, like an RMR for the Glock 17 I currently own

I guess what my main question is, is what do you guys feel comfortable in the woods with? Critters worried about are the types common in PA and VA, those are my two main "outdoors" destinations. Is a 9mm sufficient for such critters, or would the .45/10mm be that much more effective?

Thank you for any thoughts or opinions!

I'd take a look at a G29 for a backpacking gun. The 10mm will have the best chance of taking down any animal in PA than any other calibers in Glocks lineup. You can also buy several conversion barrels for the G29 if you desire.

I think dumping a mag of 9mm into the face of anything out there would give it pause.

What he said. 10mm is serious stuff with the right ammo.

What's your thoughts on .357 wheelguns?

My woods gun is a G20, theres no doubt that 15 rounds of full power 10mm will stop anything found in PA, well as long as you can hit it, lol.
Mostly browsing these days, and expanding the collection.

Depending on where you are in PA...we have black bears and I certainly would want something larger than 9mm.

Your plan makes sense to me...having both 45ACP and 10mm would be the best of both worlds.

Or you could just shoot it with one .45 round and watch the target dissappear into a shower of sparks.

I'm not going in the woods with a 9mm. I'm not going in the twigs for that matter with a 9mm. 357mag is the least I am going in the woods with.

You could always go with a fnp-45 enough .45 rounds to stop anything. Since you will be backpacking no need to worry about conceal concerns associated with it.

Seriously, critters in the woods? I've been hunting for twenty years and have a cabin in Huntington Co. I've never saw a black bear in the woods ever. I know people who have though. Though there are coyote around , they are hard enought to get close to with cover scent and a call. Many swear there are mountain lions in Pa but we all want to see a body. So in the Philly burbs, I would only worry about the two legged variety. Maybe in Tioga County.
How many PA. residents get attacked each year from black bear? My brother-in law had one run towards him and right by at 5 yards. Scared him to death. Thought he was going to be attacked, but the bear wasn't even interested, just running full bore thru the woods.
