It's just all the parts needed to build an AR except for the lower.

I had thought that a kit was already assembled, but I don't think that's the case. You still need to "build" it.

A TOTAL build would be when you buy each piece and you can pick EXACTLY what parts you want. For example: you may want parts reom several different manufacturers.

(Although the Del-Ton kits DO offer some options when choosing a kit)

Someone correct me if I'm wrong here.

ETA: See, now that I want an AR, even NineseveN want's to be like me!
some "kits" do come with complete (already assembled) uppers...along with a lower parts kit (LPK) and a stock/buffer.

you basically just have to supply your own stripped lower...put the LPK in it and the stock/buffer on it...then slap on the already assembled upper that came with the kit.

that's prolly just because different people use the term "kit" to mean different things.

that's the problem with "buzzwords" in general.

assembling the lower really is not difficult at all...and requires no special tools (not even punches, imho. i find that a pair of vice-grips with electrical tape around them to protect the finish of the lower actually makes the job easier than using punches, but ymmv.)

having a diagram certainly helps (i think there is one...perhaps with step-by-step instructions even...available somewhere on AR15.com). most of the parts will only fit in one place and in one direction anyway, though.

it's one of those things that looks intimidating until you actually do it and then you find out it is actually quite simple. once you dig in, you'll find it's not much harder than those toddler toys where they have to put the square piece in the square hole and the round piece in the round hole.

the only remotely difficult part of assembling a lower is keeping the springs and detent pins (or whatever they are called) that hold the bigger pins that join the upper to the lower in place from flying across the room as you put them in.

assembling an upper is a different story...you need some skills and some tools.

i'd love to attend the build party...i'd be happy to share my limited knowledge of building and learn a thing or two myself from the likes of lycan (hopefully we will have an upper to assemble as well).

You know, I almost WELCOME the physical "building" part.
It seems that's the EASY part.

The difficult part is figuring out WTF a "part" IS! LOL!

You asked for it, now you got it!

    http://www.ar15.com/content/guides/assembly/lower/

One thing to watch out for is the Bolt Catch spring and the Disconnector spring are very close in design. The spring with the larger end coil is for the Disconnector and it fits "larger coil" side down into the trigger.

    Thanks Hawk, I'll bookmark that.
Still doesn't help me decide what I need to buy...

I'm gonna avoid asking build questions HERE since this thread already exists and has been petty helpful...

I thought you were going for this: http://www.del-ton.com/Rifle_Kit_p/rkt100.htm

All you need then is this: http://www.aimsurplus.com/acatalog/S..._Receiver.html

    And this: http://www.aimsurplus.com/acatalog/D...Parts_Kit.html

Yup, it comes with the parts kit but no lower.

    Quote from that page:
    About
16" M4 rifle kit comes with everything needed to complete a stripped lower receiver.
Includes fully assembled, headspaced and test fired upper receiver, lower parts kit and buttstock.
Rifle kit does not include stripped lower

So it looks like around $600 and your good to go.
