mosin nagant ?
I am new to guns and especialy the 2 mosins i have the first is a 1943 91/30 and the second is an m44 1953 hungarian ( bought it for my son as the 91/30 is to long) but now he says the m44 is to heavy, i did take the bayonet off but it still feels heaveyer than the 91/30. i had reachurched and i know the m44 is supposed to be a bit heaver but the stock feels butt heavy . is this a common thing with mosins that stocks have that much weight differance? for now we are trying to stay inexpensive untill we find out how much we enjoy hunting thanks for any advice

Re: mosin nagant ?
One thing to consider is that the weight of the rifle will help to reduce felt recoil somewhat. When shooting the M44 you'll probably notice the kick a bit more and so it can be less fun to shoot for someone not used to it. Also, if your son shoots while seated using a bench rest or sandbags the weight will be supported and will be less of an issue. But the 7.62x54R round might take some getting used to with either rifle. Maybe you could start with a .22 just to get used to shooting and work your way up to the Mosins?

Re: mosin nagant ?
How old is your son and by the caliber you chose, I have assume you are hunting deer? One idea may be to simply sell the M44 and pick up a Mossberg with interchangable barrels so you can hunt small game with a shotgun and use slugs for deer.
The Mossberg Bantam Field/Deer combo will be lighter and may give you more options. I believe I have seen those on sale at Dicks Sporting Goods for around $275."The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of 'liberalism,' they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened."

Re: mosin nagant ?
my son is 12 / 13 in a few months. he has shot a 30/30 several time with his uncle.( personaly i felt the 91/30 did not kick like the 30/30) i understand the grain will affect the kick as well for now he will shoot 174 brown bear and i have added the rubber but plate to take some kick out . for me it seamed to balance the gun better but on the 91/30 it made it front heavy. yes we are deer hunting he also has a 22/20ga interchangeable for small game and turkey the next boy should be ready to hunt this fall and in 2 more years the 3rd boy will be joing us.

I live relatively close and have 3 91/30s in shipment to me, I would be happy to trade one for the M44. Could make the switch in Edinboro if you are interested.

Re: mosin nagant ?
we are still new to hunting and went to the gamelands hunting one day and were able to sit for a while and another day we were with some friends and walked most of the time. next year we may have more time to prepair before hunting it saw all sortof sudden this year he is my stepson and his "father" was supposed to take him but the had a disagreement and "father" backed out so i had to get guns quick he did barrow a 30/30 from his grandpa and i picked up a mosin for $120 and away we went the reason for the m44 is it was shorter and we would have the same ammo that way if we found time in a hurry we would have what we needed quick for the after school hr or so hunt
i just got the m44 and now that i did have some more time i took them both apart and found the stock on the the stock on the m44 a bit heaver but the barrel and reciver were also heaver making the gun heaver for him over all he did agree to take it and try shooting it . if he does not like it i will keep it for my self as it is shorter and would be easyer to cary through the woods. for now i am trying to lighten it up for him

/as comrade commissar
"Of course is heavy, is gun for killing enemy of Rodina. Young Pioneer should not complain about weight like decadent capitalist pig solder, but instead get arms in shape (by working on collective farm) to deal with heavy stock and recoil. Will make for better partisan action against fascists and Trotskyites in future."
i did take the bayonet off but it still feels heaveyer than the 91/30.

Hungarian M44s are among the better ones out there. Hope your young lad appreciates what it is that he has, as the M44, properly equipped, should bring down anything that moves within the Commonwealth. These are the exalted gharāniq, whose intercession is hoped for. LMAO
