    Default AR FSB question...

So I have had my AR for about year or so.

Its built on now defunct AnvilArm lower, and using YHM upper, DPMS barrel/FCG/LPK, and few other manufactures thrown in for small parts.

It shoots good and all, and pretty accurate using AimPoint M2 on SOG Armory mount.
Its also accurate with its iron, but my FSB seems canted in one direction, and in order to zero, I had to move my rear sight all the way to one side.
Now, this is not that big deal, as it still shoots straight and all.

But I want to fix the canted FSB.
I took the gun apart, and it seems to be caused by the small differences between the upper receiver notch and barrel pin.
So I figured that there are 2 ways I can go about fixing this.

I can take a small file and very carefully file the side of the upper receiver notch to open it up until the front sight can sit up straight(easy fix).
Or I can leave the receiver notch alone, and instead, redrill the FSB pin recess on barrel(like how most people fix canted FSB on AK. Much harder in my eye).

Which way would be the proper ways to go?

I would chop the FSB and add on a DD fixed front sight to your rail.

I wouldn't mess with redrilling the taper pin holes (not a good idea), and I don't see good results from hacking on the index pin.

The rail mounted sight will outlast the barrel and be useful on any future builds/configurations.

This is the best advice you're gonna get for this problem. Try redrilling and you will end up getting the new front sight, anyway. You do not want any play around the indexing pin. JMHO

That's the way to go, unless you have to have a factory type front sight.
There are several ways to un-cant a front sight base but they are all more expensive.

How 'attached' are you to that A2/A3 style sight post, anyways?

I'd ditch it, go with a DD or Vltor lo-profile gas block, get you some better, LONGER rails, and a Troy G3-style folding front sight.

    But that's just me.

    Or ...

Clamp type fixed FSB (w/ adjustable gas):

While I always liked the look of conventional A1/A2 FSB, being the it's almost the time of the gift from uncle Sam, gas block with folding post type front sight certainly is a viable option.
I do not care for the extended quad rail for carbine, but better rail system with gas piston is something I do eventually like to do

Actually I think that the clamp on gas block wouldn't be a very good idea. If you're going to clamp it on so it's vertical in relation to the receiver the gas port isn't going to line up properly, same thing with shifting the existing one and redrilling the pins. I'd say that some light filework on the index pin notch would probably be your best (least expensive/involved) bet for right now. As long as you take it slow and recheck frequently and stop as soon as you have it level it really shouldn't be that big a deal as long as you don't mind pulling the barrel nut.

I would chop the existing one, install a 10" quadrail and end cap, and throw on a matech BUIS on the rear and a flip up front one. but thats just me.
