NJ Training Classes and taking your weapon there.
Ok so I see everybody and their close relatives from John Farnam to Jeff Gonzalez are making stops next year in Central and north Jersey and totally avoiding SE PA. Since any point in Jersey is three times closer to Philly than Pittsburg on NH I'm really tempted to sign up for one of those classes. Here is the but, a NJ law. How illegal is it for me to transport an unloaded locked handgun/carabine with high capacity magazines to any place in NJ. Brian Aitken's ordeal is still very fresh in my mind. Is there a provision in NJ law that allows non residents to bring an otherwise illegal weapons for a day of training into their state?

They arrest people for bb guns. I wouldn’t step foot in that state with a gun (or without one).

I train shooters at PA and NJ ranges. Here is the official answer.
www.state.nj.us/njsp/about/firearms/html
since you are only shooting paper bring fmj ammo. But practice and training is a legal reason to own and transport hollowpoints. Problem is that XX% of the police don't know that.
Also keep all targets, earmuffs etc. out of sight during the trip.Teaching people how to shoot safely and accurately for 54 years. www.gunskills.com

Just got my laugh of the day when I clicked the link for carrying a gun to NJ and got text that read
"The page you have requested cannot be displayed because it does not exist"
**edit**
Looks like link should be www.state.nj.us/njsp/about/firearms.htmlLast edited by G19; December 22nd, 2010 at 10:15 AM. Reason: Add correct link

You can legally transport - as you delineated - for training purposes, but guns and components must be NJ legal. That means 15 rd mag max limit and semi-auto long guns must be NJ AWB compliant. Good luck with that.

Re: NJ Training Classes and taking your weapon there.
Assuming it's not a one-day class, how could you legally handle transporting it to/from a hotel, restaurants, having it with you at the hotel, etc? Lock it up at the range, perhaps? Seems a NJ firearms ID card would be a good idea. It seems like very poor planning to schedule a class like this in the Garden State.

trident concepts was using a national guard range in DE, last spring, class was schedule there however day before class it got move to central NJ. i guess they no longer use the DE range. that sucks cause training classes in NJ is a big FU to us, No 16rd mags, most everyone's AR can't go there and lot of ppl won't travel there. but base on the students I've seen in Trident's class, it probably 95% LEOs or Mil.
If i get to training with jeff, i guess it will be in exter NH

Re: NJ Training Classes and taking your weapon there.
Yeap looks like it is completely illegal since this page deals only with Federal Safe passage law. I can transport it thru the state going to NH but forget about taking it to THE state. CF all around. Really hate shooting loaner guns but the distance can't be beat. Decisions decisions. I really don't understand why those tier one instructors hate SE PA so much. Plenty of ranges overhere that'll have them.
