Default Marlin 795 as first firearm?

Hello everyone. I just turned 18 last month, and after alot of research and pricing I think that a Marlin 795 would be a great starter.

What do you guys(and girls!) think of it?

    Not a bad start.

The Marlin 795 is a member of the Mod 60 family of semi automatic .22 rimfire rifles.

The design dates back to 1959. Millions of them in many variations have been sold over the years.

Some cost cutting measures have been employed over the years to keep manufacturing costs down. Some of the changes have been good, such as a improvements of the feed ramp.

If you act fast, Marlin has a $25 rebate on the 795 through the end of the year.

If you expect to put a scope on it, I would suggest taking a gander at the Bushnell line of Sportsman scopes. Small money for a decent .22 scope.

Let us know what you decide.

Welcome to the forum and welcome to the addiction of purchasing firearms.

I have no experience with the 795 specifically. A friend had a model 60 and it was a fantastic little rifle. We shot that thing for hours and hours as teenagers.

Sounds like a good first investment. Learn your technique on the .22 then move up to something larger when ready.

Thank you for the reply. Is the twenty five dollar rebate from wherever I buy it from?

It'd be from Marlin, but it'd have to be a brand new gun via a dealer.

Another question I have.. If one of my parents buys it, can they buy it as a present for me, or would I have to buy it myself because it would be illegal? Thanks.

Parents can "gift" longarms to their children, as far as I know... but I'd say go pick it up yourself. That's just how I choose to lean.

If your parents are footing the bill, convince them you'd really, really LOVE a $200 Visa Gift Card. Go to Dick's, where I believe the 795 runs around $130. Then go to WalMart and drop the remaining $70 on CCI MiniMag, shooting glasses, hearing protection and a basic cleaning kit. When you get the rebate check, buy two more magazines.

    Welcome to the hobby.

I have heard the 795 called a magazine fed version of the model 60, which to me sounds like high praise. ('Cause everyone loves the model 60.) And I've yet to hear anything bad about it.

And the price is great. Go for it.

Consider a ruger 10/22. They have an outstanding track record, and there are more accessories available for the 10/22. The only experience I have with the 795 is seeing one be completely jammed up at the range.
