Specific Chamber Cleaning Question
How important is it to clean, specifically and independently, the chamber of a high precision target rifle? I have a .308, and while everybody cleans the barrel obviously, the chamber seems optional. Also, it seems I can't really find any .308 chamber brushes, however chamber cleaning seems to be important in keeping an m1 Garand (30 06) clean, so I'm guessing I can just use a 30 06 chamber brush on my .308? I just don't know so if someone could pitch in their .02 I'd be really greatful.
thanks!

Re: Specific Chamber Cleaning Question
30-06 and .308 are both .30 cal dia. I dont see why it shouldn't work.
Most of those Brushes are multi caliber any way.

Re: Specific Chamber Cleaning Question
The chamber itself shouldn't be getting real dirty anyway. However, if you want to clean the chamber you could go with a .45 brush (the .308 case about .4709" at the rear and .454 at the shoulder) so a .45 brush should help clean the chamber. Or go with a 20 or 16 gauge brush for a tighter fit in the chamber.
I really don't think you'll find much crud in the chamber though. For more info go to one of the bench rest shooters forums and see what the precision shooters say about cleaning the chamber.Ron USAF Ret E-8 FFL01/SOT3 NRA Benefactor Member

Re: Specific Chamber Cleaning Question
There usually isn't enough crud in the chamber for a brush. Midway has chamber mops available. I bought acouple, but never use them anymore. For my .308 varmint rifle I always used a .45 patch on one of the plastic cleaning rods that came with my Glocks. My thinking is that a metal rod may ding up the rifling in the throat. That wouldn't have near the effect as a ding in the crown rifling, but you are talking about a precision rifle.
