Police Officer Reference?!?
My friend lives in Johnstown and he is currently applying for his LTCF. He sent the application in and they got back to him saying he needed two Police officer references.... ??? What's going on? Was he flagged by something and they're just trying to deter him or is this a normal thing in Johnstown?
Doesn't seem like it fits any of the PA laws to me. As we've brought up before, there's nothing even about references in the law and now they want police officer references??? Can anyone tell me what's going on? (So I can relay to him)

Re: Police Officer Reference?!?
That sounds unreasonable to me.... cripes, when I was 22 and getting hired by a police department I couldn't have given two police officer refrences.

Re: Police Officer Reference?!?
Sounds to me like another attempt at bending the law so that ordinary good guys (and gals) who are law abiding citizens have to bend over backwards to get an LCTF

Re: Police Officer Reference?!?
Relax. First, have him send a few dozen Dunkin Donuts to the PD, then ask if anyone can vouch for him.
Problem solved.
All kidding aside, that's pretty much unacceptable - unless the story was not relayed properly. "Shall issue state" my ass.
That just sounds strange to me, as Johnstown is more of a hick town than a "city", so I wouldn't expect such nonsense.
Note to all offended hicks: I grew up back that way, so I'm allowed to say that.
I called to check my ZIP CODE!....DY-NO-MITE!!!

Re: Police Officer Reference?!?
Isn't this similar to the card montgomery county has you get filled out by your local PD??

Re: Police Officer Reference?!?
This is in Cambria county right?
Step 1, imo, is to politely request the policy in writing & try to get a meeting with the Sheriff.
Step 2 is to go visit the DA's office.
If that fails, step 3 is to embarrass the Sheriff in the press.
That's just my take on it, at least.

I actually know a few cops...not in that area though....and they personally told me that it is against Dept policy to be references for a LTCF due to liability issues since they're cops. Your area may vary.

Re: Police Officer Reference?!?
Tell your friend he is being overcharged also. According to the sheriff's website.
He charges $35 for a "gun permit".
No mention of what he charges for a LTCF, though.

Re: Police Officer Reference?!?
Did he provide any references? If not, simply fill in two references and resubmit it.... I'd ignore the 'police officer references' comment for now...
If it's rejected again, then pursue it with the Police Chief by way of educating him/her on the actual law... and the approved PSP form...
