    Default Mosin Nagant Problem

Ok, first of all, it's not a sticky bolt, because I haven't shot it, so the cosmoline couldn't of melted and stuck the bolt. However, when I push the bolt half way forward, it completely gets stuck, and i have to get a hammer to bang the bolt backwards.

When I get all the way forward with a 2x4, the bolt won't twist down near the stock, so I really don't know what to do. I've searched all over the net, all I could find is the sticky bolt, but I don't think that is the problem.

    Help appreciated!

    Thanks very much

uh throw it out and get a new one? Aren't they like $40 still? Cheaper than a trip to the gunsmith...

just kidding... are there any big visible burrs or obstructions when you hit the point it sticks?

Push it as far as you can, until it sticks. Then, check the bolt, and where the bolt contacts, to see if there is any obstruction.

It could be damage, or something similar.
I'm so fast, I can bump fire a bolt action.

    First, DON'T hammer it!

    Intriguing...

Second, without any pictures it's anyone's guess what's happening. How about posting a photo or two of *where* it's stopping in it's travel, and maybe a photo showing the receiver (interior) with the bolt removed.

While we're waiting for images, tell us a few more details.

    • Have you tried cleaning it? Particularly the bolt, while disassembled, and the locking recesses?
    • Are there any obvious indications of trouble, like scoring marks on the bolt body?
    • Is the rear receiver screw tightened down?
    • Is the ejector/interrupter bent?

There is no obstructions that is blocking it in anyway.

Before you install the bolt it has to be in the cocked position as it is a cock on open mechanism. Make sure your bolt looks exactly like the pics below before trying to install it and it is not in the safe position.

what he said . . . . try a good cleaning, just because you haven't fired it doesn't mean someone else in the last 50 years (or more) hasn't and didn't clean it. Bolts can also get a bunch of cosmo inside them that needs cleaned out

Here is how i fix them. I take the gun apart take the bolt out place the barrel lightly in a vise and gently pry where the bolt goes in to spreed it apart just a little. Works great even if I am going to be looked down on for asking you to try this. Let me know how it goes.

Prying the reciever to loosen it will create an unreliable mechanism. DO NOT DO THIS!!! If the bolt is loose at the rear of the action it will bump fire or slam fire. This would be like ripping the back of a coat down the middle so you could zip it. It will definately cause more problems than you already have. If you are gonna do this just get a bigger hammer and a longer 2x4.
