slug selection---Special regs area
How many of you use specific slugs in your hunting shotguns and how do they group?
I went out to Greater Pitt Gun club to see where my Point of impact is on the slugs i generally use.
I posted last year that Remington copper sabots and Lightfield sabots hit about the same at 100 yds.
Here is the target with the all copper Rem's on the right and the Lightfields on the left.
The shotgun is an Ithaca M87 Deerslayer with a 20" rifled bbl and a Simmons 3X9 scope. I set this up specifically to hunt in Allegheny Co about 15 yrs ago.
The Simmons should have been replaced this year but will make it through one more season.
The Rem copper solids are 1oz and the Lightfields are 1 1/4 oz which I thought should group a bit different at 100. Both sabots are 2 3/4 "
Do any of you spend time to see how different slugs group and if so, what are your results?

Re: slug selection---Special regs area
I guess if i ever hunt the special regs area I'll just use my in-line muzzle-loader since i do not have a slug barrel.

Re: slug selection---Special regs area
I am a Lightfield guy. I use only the 20ga. 2 3/4" Hybred EXP sabot slugs. I've been able to consistently group about 3" at 100 yds with no problem. I use a Rem. 870 cantilever slug gun and I love it! I have tried a few other brands but these are the tightest in my gun.

Re: slug selection---Special regs area
I only shot one deer with a 20ga rabbit gun (Savage model 30, bead front sight, no rear site, std rifled slugs). 30 yds. I pulled up just like shooting at a rabbit and let 2 fly. I hit the deer too far forward (it was moving)so it ran about 300/400 yds back toward my truck. Had I known, I'd have left the tailgate down .
Had to put it down with another shot after tracking it in snow. The first hit looked like someone took a quart of blood and just fanned it out into the snow.
I bought the Ithaca 12 ga before the next season and started shooting BRI sabots which were eventually bought out by Winchester.
The Rem all copper sabots are going for $12.99 at Dunhams where the Lightfields are $8.99 and look at the target. The Lightfields grouped at about an inch and the Rem at about 2.
The 2 to 3 inches high at 100 ought to make me good to just over 125-130yds (I hope).
getting closer,

Re: slug selection---Special regs area
Just found this sight and it's great. I shoot Winchester Rifled slugs thru a Remington 1100 with a slug barrell. It's topped with a Simmons 3x10 (I like lots of light). It's zeroed at 75 yds. and holds a 2.5 inch group from a rest. My best shot was at 110 yds leaning on a tree at a feeding deer. It was only 20 yds and dead from where it was standing.
