    Default Hunting Partners

I moved here from Va and I'm trying to get a good understanding of the good counties to hunt in and what is the standard mode of hunting here i.e. (private property vs. public)

If anyone would like someone to hunt with, let me know.

Private land if you can score the property. Your area is just about as prime as it gets for deer hunting. 10, 20, 30 years ago hunting "upstate" was bigger than christmas to many adult guys in PA. Many of the kids wanted to join the bigger boys for the trek north a day or two after thanksgiving, and to this day it still is a great time for many people that still make the yearly trek to the cabin. For the first 6 years of my hunting career this was true. I no longer go "upstate" for opening day of buck although I miss the atmosphere of all that goes with it, people change and so does deer hunting in PA. It cost a lot more money to go up there to hunt. There is hardly any deer up there compared to down here also. Within the last 10 years they have made the slug gun a piece of machinery that rivals any good deer rifle they are using upstate, and the deer are bigger, and also plentiful. So this year like the past 14 years or so I will travel around 45 min. round trip instead of 5-10 hours. I will sleep in my own bed and hunt with my son, and use a slug gun. I also think many people are doing the same. Sorry about going on a certain trail you did not intend this thread to go on, but when you ask the question about the good counties to hunt in it brought back 19 years of hunting in PA, and how it has changed in that time. If deer is what you are after 5C, 5D WMU are as good as it gets in PA. If you have the money to buy a place upstate manage it put a food plot in and build the herd up within 5 years hopefully you will have a good spot to hunt. Those counties for me would be Tioga, Potter, Mckean, Bradford.

Everything as stated above (good post)

Private land is always better but hard to find. Public land is plentiful but gets crowded very quickly. Get yourself an antler-less tag for 5C and you'll be able to hunt deer until the end of Jan instead of just the 2 weeks the rest of the state gets. Small game is ok in 5C, plenty of squirrel and some Rabbit and they stock a small number of Pheasant. Other counties are far better for other animals. NE PA for Bear/Turkey etc...

    Spencer,

Just moved here myself a couple years ago. I found a hunting partner and some good public land spots. He had a stroke two weeks before opening day. My season's all but shot except I took a buck Thanksgiving back home in New England. But there's still time to shotgun hunt next month here.

One of my issues is in I'm in an apartment, probably for another year, and have no good place to butcher. I'd like a partner, for obvious reasons, and if you have a place to butcher even better. Let me know if your interested tomyelac@yahoo.com.

I slept on getting doe permits for 5C this year, but would love to hunt closer to home.
Guns are dangerous, but no guns is more dangerous.

They still have(or had) the last time I checked something like 10K left. You can go to the county treasurers office and pick them up there on the spot. They're only like 7 bucks. If they still have any(last time I checked was about a month ago) I only got one 5C tag this year, 2 5B tags(used one) and my Buck tag. I do not plan on shooting another 5B doe, since I already shot one, I am not being as antsy now and I am going to try to get a buck with my bow. As far as my 5C tag goes, all I can shoot is another doe with my muzzleloader so I don't have much choice. I would rather just see a shooter buck than shoot another doe. Again I hunt for meat not horns, I just don't like shootin the does. Especially in late season. Half of them are already impregnated(or should be) and I don't like the idea of killing an unborn animal.

Just me....or the conservationist in me I guess.
