Has anyone tried ABS (black) pipe to build these? I know that PVC is pretty brittle during cold weather and can shatter when hit. I was thinking ABS foamcore is a bit less brittle in colder weather.

I should take a piece each and give it the bullet test.

I also believe for a few bucks, you can buy a drill mounted tool called a "socket saver" which can remove the plastic which is glued into the fitting hub which would let you reuse the fittings if the pipe itself breaks.

I have the stuff to weld target stands so I never tried making them out of plastic pipe.

I have 3 shown at the left side of the pic.
I have a quick question. I like the target on the spring it looks fun to shoot. Does it flex much when shot with a hand gun?

Who ever shoots in the cold? That's crazy talk .

I have the equipment to weld stands too. In fact i thought pretty hard about doing just that. But honestly i think pvc is cheaper than steel.

    Nice stands btw.

No, they don't deflect much with handgun rounds. I'll PM you a few other pics so we don't hijack the thread.

I was lucky enough to get the steel for free on various construction projects and I'll bet pretty much you might be one of those cold weather shooters .

The plastic is not only cheaper but a hell of a lot faster (and lighter) to build and can be made windproof as you guys stated.

Just the one on one garage time with your son is worth it.

Easy to repair...if your aim is a little off!

I shot at a range in Lancaster County that used chicken wire as backboards. The targets were held on the backing with clothes pins.
