Remove Gun Before Turning On The Oven
This article raises more questions than answers.
A handgun hidden in the lower broiler of an oven caused a small fire at a home in the 1000 block of South Magnolia on Wednesday morning.
The fire was reported at approximately 10:20 a.m. Residents had used a dry chemical extinguisher and water to contain the fire and mostly extinguished it. Upon their arrival, Yuma firefighters ensured the fire was completely out and began an investigation into the cause.
The investigation determined that a handgun left in the lower broiler of the oven caused the fire. The appliance ignited when the oven was turned on. Much of the gun was incinerated in the fire but it was believed to have been loaded with some of the ammunition going off in the fire.
A neighbor, who was assisting the resident, reported hearing popping sounds when they were dousing the fire with water. There were no injuries.
“It is very unusual, and I have never heard of anything like this before,” said Mike Erfert, spokesman for the Yuma Fire Department. “Oven fires happen often, but this was definitely unusual.”
Erfert said the resident of the home reported having no previous knowledge of the handgun or how it got in the oven. The Yuma Police Department took possession of the weapon and is investigating the matter.
“We took the gun because the homeowners said it wasn't theirs,” said Sgt. Clint Norred, spokesman for the Yuma Police Department. “We have labeled the report a suspicious incident and have some follow-up investigation to do on that particular gun.”
Oven fires are frequently caused by items being stored inside the oven and failing to remove those items before use. It is advised to always check your oven for combustible items before turning it on.

It was me. I wanted to torture test my glock, but didn't want to ruin my oven.
I wonder how it held up?

I seem to recall seeing this story about 2 to 3 times every year.
Not as uncommon as one may think.

You put me in an oven and I'll go off too. Guns have a mind of their own so I guess this gun decided that it had enough.

Re: Remove Gun Before Turning On The Oven
I laughed when I read this, then I remember what my uncle did. My cousin raced motorcycles his shop was in the back shed. After the first break in, my uncle placed a loaded 45 in the microwave right by the back door. He would turn on the yard light and grab the 45 at the same time. No more break ins.
I always stressed to my son"one shot one kill that was all that is needed". When He came home from Marine Corp Boot camp He was telling me about the Marines stressing "ONE SHOT ONE KILL" He looks at me and the light bulb went on Dad was now a whole lot smarter than he was 13 weeks ago.
